JUGNI: Music Leads the Way! [3/5]

A simple, unpretentious and wide-eyed country boy is trying to be apologetic to the girl he’s been with all night under the same sheet. Local liquor brand can be held responsible but the girl is taken aback, “Sorry? What for?” “For everything”, the boy is in deep guilt. “Not for everything. Say sorry only for why you left me alone there.” The girl is definitely more independent, free and open, and emotionally less complicated. So is Shefali Bhushan’s JUGNI. It likes to have its own sense of rhythm with melodies that induce extreme likeness and energy in you to match up with the beats life throws at you.

Vibhavari [Sugandha Garg], a small-time music director from Mumbai lands in a small village in Punjab in search of soulful Sufi music that might give her all the recognition and respect she wants from the world. Her spell with the local talents greatly reminds you of Sneha Khanwalkar’s stint in MTV’s SOUND TRIPPIN. Old timer Bibi Saroop [Sadhana Singh] and her son Mastana [Siddhant Bahl] are her best bets. Where Bibi Saroop is more into earthy, emotional and expressive Sufi music, her son loves to be the man of masses. His songs can be as weirdly enjoyable as having rhyming words like ‘Kidney-Sidney’. The bonding over the music collaboration slowly starts overlapping on the relationships on both the sides. Mastana’s loudmouthed girlfriend Preeto [Anurrita Jha] knows for sure that no city girl can ever be trusted. The live-in partner of Vibhavari, Sid [Samir Sharma] still doesn’t understand much about her recent decisions in life.

Shefali, in her first directorial venture gives us a fresh breeze of storytelling that is highly enriched with melodic tunes, believable characters, some real good performances if not great, an eye-pleasing cinematography and a writing that never settles for being a regular. The music sessions filmed in/for the film are undoubtedly the best moments in the film. The participation of celebrated names like A R Rehman and Vishal Bhardwaj makes sure this small ‘all heart’ musical doesn’t remain small in terms of giving you a good time in theatres. Watching Sadhna Singh making a great comeback is a different pleasure all together. She is still very much skilled to enthuse life even in a dull frame. Anurrita Jha is effortless. Samir Sharma plays it as neat as it should be.

Siddhant Bahl impresses with his ease and energy. The job was to look a high-spirited, ever-excited and over the top character that wears more colors than the shade-card of any Paint manufacturing brand at any given time. And Siddhant is always at it. The other two names that make JUGNI work are Shellee and Sugandha Garg. Shellee’s dialogues range from being madly rustic to finely consequential. Sugandha on the other hand provides a solid support to the story with a character-sketch that can promptly ask for a quick financial help from her boyfriend soon after throwing at him a hint of break-up. She looks every bit of the free-spirited Vibhavari.

Overall, JUGNI comes as a pleasant surprise that leaves you wanting more of its fresh approach in storytelling, likeable characters and a celebratory session of refreshing music. Some loose ends and an uneven screenwriting can always be overlooked if you are leaving the theatre and thinking of how soon you can get these soundtracks on your phone playlist. If not for anything else, for your EARS only! [3/5]

TAMASHA: A Bioscope to life, and to your ‘self’ within! [3.5/5]

I dare not go any sentence further in approving Imtiaz Ali’s most personal artistic take on love, life and limitless conflicting conditions around the both, before having a word of strict advice for you that TAMASHA is not an easy watch. It neither is just another ‘boy-meets-girl’ love-story to write, shoot, edit and release. Only an Imtiaz Ali can helm the project of such risky, self-destructive and boomerang-like nature; and my suggestions here are heading towards Imtiaz Ali of today and not of pre-ROCKSTAR. If JAB WE MET and SOCHA NA THA were busy twisting the lighter side of love, if ROCKSTAR and HIGHWAY were falling for the darker region; TAMASHA is a multihued psychological exercise to reinvent, reestablish and renew your ‘self’ under mystically painful care and custody of love. TAMASHA is not an extravagant, star-studded, all flashy WIZCRAFT production of a celebrity world-tour but a cute, tiny, little bioscope which immediately transports you to the world of your dreams and your aspirations; where you’re the ‘Tamasha’ and not just a sitting idle spectator.

In the very earliest scenes, Imtiaz makes Piyush Mishra playing an older than the old storyteller in the film mouth an exposition when he mixes up with two different stories of worlds poles apart, “toh pareshaani kya hai? The story is always the same. Do not fall for their names, places and other details. Just sit back and enjoy.” and that’s enough to hint you about the most predictable plot one can have for a love-story. Boy meets girl, on the beautiful locations in Corsica, France. They decide not to reveal their identities and be complete strangers to each other. Both part their ways. Four years down, the girl still in awe of the vibrant personality of the boy reaches to him. He is now succumbed to the all emotionless, motorized and mechanical race of the corporate world. The girl rejects the new bore. The dejected boy is now looking for a new end to his story. After all, it is never too late to start a fresh. Now as an easy entertainment seeker, you may voice a question that why always the same story, even the tagline on the posters suggests the same but then, I think TAMASHA was never about the story. It doesn’t take the easy route with over-simplified solutions to the monstrous-looking problems but decides to go on the ‘self-discovery’ mode to find some of the toughest answers only you and life can juice it out together.

There are more than a couple of reasons when I call Imtiaz the new-age ‘Yash Chopra’. The way he makes it happen, the way he breaks into the susceptible space of separation and the way he paints the pain, is meticulously relatable, unswerving and apt. He hardly creates a situation; he just opens up another unseen layer buried deep within his characters. Apart from the dialogues that rarely sound anything written, scrumptious camerawork, soul-pleasing soundtrack by A R Rahman and imaginatively decorated lyrics by Irshad Kamil, TAMASHA marks towering performances from both the leads. Though the film belongs more to Ranbir Kapoor’s character in the central role, let me honor Deepika Padukone first to talk about. The cranky, complaining independent girl of PIKU here shows off her complete different avatar in a more edgy, persuasive and in pain character of an anxious lover. You don’t have to make an extra effort to notice some of her atypical expressions you sure haven’t seen anywhere else. If she effortlessly makes your heart bleed in ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’, she also steals it with her sparkling eyes even while being utterly there in playful conversations with Ranbir.  And now the boy himself! TAMASHA brings back Ranbir in the race. The inconsistent ‘velvet’y touch is forgiven and forgotten. The all new and fresh Kapoor shifts gears like a pro. The bathroom scene, the story-telling session at home, the apology scene; there are moments that will haunt you even after full night sleeps in the next couple of days. Undoubtedly, one of the best performances this year!

Despite going into a self-pleasing theatrical mode and uncommonly imprecise scenes of creative satisfaction, Imtiaz earns full marks on taking the risk most of the filmmakers today hesitate. Otherwise, who would dare to compose scenes with profile shots of the leads when they are busy sporting the most unforced yet intricate emotions on their face? TAMASHA is not flawless. TAMASHA is not regular. TAMASHA is inspiring. TAMASHA is mesmeric. TAMASHA is a journey you should take at least once in a lifetime to make it all right you couldn’t dare all these years. O KADHAL KANMANI [Tamil]: Alaipayuthey 2.0! Sweet, cute but clichéd!! [2.5/5]

Mani Ratnam’s idea of romance has always ensured a sweet smell of freshness, the most vivacious colours of passion and an engaging contemporary space building up in relationships. Meanwhile, you can also argue on his obsession with the clichés but with a nice and easy twist to it. And that could be anything ranging from social disparity to political turmoil and even mix-ups in its tiniest form! The master’s latest O KADHAL KANMANI is no exception. The breezy romance brings back the charm of Mani Saar’s own successful romantic drama ALAIPAYUTHEY so much that you could even re-coined its title to ALAIPAYUTHEY 2.0 […comes from its main lead, a game-developer]; if not in every sense, in the looks and clichés for sure.

O KADHAL KANMANI sees two beautiful love-stories at parallel tracks. One being the supporting addition to the plot is obviously less explored but I would love to take it from their perspective. Ganpathy [Prakash Raj] lives with his loving wife Bhavani [Leela Samson], a known Carnatic singer suffering from Alzheimer. The unconditional love can be smelled through both; Ganpathy’s unflinching affection and care for Bhavani and Bhavani’s teasing one-liners taking her husband for a ride. The other couple in question happens to be the lighthearted, relaxed and blithe paying-guest at Ganpathy’s, Adi [Dulquer Salmaan] and his career-oriented girlfriend Tara [Nithya Menen]. Together, they opt for a live-in relationship as both don’t want to lose the spotlight of the brightest career ahead. But soon; the families get involved and though for a change, they are in complete support, the couple is still finding their ways to find love. Can Ganpathy and Bhavani help?

It’s been exactly 14 years and 3 days since ALAIPAYUTHEY hit the cinemas and made itself a rage amongst young generation. The similarities between two are amazingly coincidental till Mani saar himself comes with an explanation. There are already roundups on social media drawing a conclusion from how Madhvan’s & Shalini’s characters in ALAIPAYUTHEY have taken a leap and are back as Ganapathy and Bhavani. There are song-sequences having rhythmic feel and shot-selections of the same prototype, still the film manages to keep a constant smile on your face even in its dull moments. The credit mostly goes to the magical characters Mani Ratnam brings on screen. Each one from both the love-stories is extremely watchable, but Prakash Raj is exceptional. His performances like this are a kind of pay off for all the hammy ones in Bollywood’s masala rip-offs.

A R Rehman’s peppy, perky and fast-beat tunes are good and catchy. P C Sriram plays beautifully with dynamic colors, moody shadows and lights coming through painted shades. With a couple that doesn’t have faith in full swings in marriages and looks promising at first with their focused career-choices, Mani Ratnam does ignite some kind of high hopes to see a coming-of-age romantic film; especially in one of the earlier scenes where Adi and Tara discuss the aftereffects of marriage that too when their best friend is taking wedding-vows at the church. But the film soon gets trapped in clichés and loses the steam.

Overall, O KADHAL KANMANI is a sweet and cute romantic film you can take your girlfriend to, no matter how badly you want to marry her or how awfully not. Watch out for the Prakash Raj-Leela Samson track as they will never leave you even after coming back from the theater. And I too want to believe they are the Madhvan-Shalini, now in their 60’s! It’s more gratifying than the whole film! [2.5/5]

‘I’: Thriller thrills! Romance sucks! Disappointing!! [2/5]

Bigger is not always better. Sometimes you do wish it to be in control, to be in its own limits. Shankar’s magnum opus in technical brilliance ‘I’ is one such effort that doesn’t bother to take charge of things going loose in the very beginning. And by the time you realize to pull the strings together, it’s already 2 and ½ hours wasted. So, the only takeaways from the film are the fast-paced, thrilling and concluding 30 minute-long climax [yes, it is a 3 hour 8 min long experiment] and the power-house performance of Vikram. Sadly, ‘I’ doesn’t meet the level of expectations and remains an average romantic-thriller worthy of mentions only for Chiyaan Vikram’s extreme physical transformations, dedicated performance and earnest efforts.

Lee aka Lingesan [Played by the awe-inspiring Vikram in his most ‘toned’ avatar] is a bodybuilder eyeing for Mr. India Title in his career. The only other obsession in life is the poster-girl of Advertising Industry Diya [Amy Jackson] who can blow his mind so so much that he starts hallucinating her in probably all the electronic devices he uses. Destiny helps them meet and soon Diya encourages Lee to join her as the leading model for a big brand campaign. Things happen as it does in love but in the meantime, Lee also ends up making evil rivals in his contemporary model John [Upen Patel], a transgender stylist and a Malya-looking flamboyant brand-head. Rest is a revenge drama full of action but without much needed freshness in the plot.

As a genre, ‘I’ could be placed in the section of romantic thrillers but the problem is Shankar endorses romance for the most part despite it being the least exciting and fascinating aspect and chooses to keep the most thrilling part for the last. At first, film romances with the chiseled body, beefy shape and powerfully built muscles of Vikram. Then comes, the outdoor location romance between Lee and Diya with old-fashioned tricks and tracks of love fitting into hearts and place! Meanwhile, songs irritate because of the absurdly written lyrics. Dialogues make you cringe. Cinematography is absolutely first-rate and gives you something to hop on. Visual effects and make-up excellence marginally work only over some of the most de-shaped, terrible and shocking physical appearances made on & for screen.

With a non-linear pattern in the narrative, Shankar does succeed in generating some kind of curiosity but the bad and the loose hand at the editing table doesn’t keep it for long. He even tries a quicky montage of one of the most significant part on the lines of the ones in Guy Ritchie’s films but when it’s not working, it’s not working. If ‘I’ is watchable at all, it is only for Vikram. As a rowdy-loud-rustic bodybuilder, he enthuses the sparks of energy on screen. Later as an ugly-looking hunchback with a past, he earns respects as an actor as well as your sympathies for the character. Amy Jackson has nothing more to show off than her all burning whitish looks. Upen Patel is just average.

In a scene, Lee harshly discards the romantic proposal of a transgender stylist and the poor soul bursts into crying plentiful of tears after the heartbreak. It was the most painful moment in the film, for many reasons. Suspicious of pesticides being used, Lee rejects to endorse a cold beverage brand in the film but doesn’t dare to show same amount of sensitivity to the transgender, it hurts more. Same goes with Shankar’s story-telling. He dares to involve technical brilliance in the story but forgets to base it on a gripping one. And it hurts. Disappointing, boring and tiring! [2/5]

HIGHWAY: An Imtiaz Ali film that is so not Imtiaz Ali Film! It’s different!! [3.5/5]

Expectations lead us to disappointments, by and large. But with Imtiaz Ali’s HIGHWAY, it is us who fall short of what to expect from this modern-age master of romance. Imtiaz is known to dig up diverse human relationships in order to drench us in the most vigorous and spirited emotions one can feel. HIGHWAY is no exception in substance but definitely in its approach. Through this journey of love, longings & togetherness in just not-so-feasible settings, Imtiaz dares to push his boundaries as a filmmaker and comes up with a love-story much darker, edgier and better than his bests.

Loosely based on ‘Stockholm syndrome’ where victim starts feeling compassionate, concerned, considerate and connected to offender’s sufferings that come as baggage from times of yore and drive him to perform such crimes, HIGHWAY brings two damaged souls troubled with their respective haunting pasts closer. Just a couple of hours before her wedding, Veera [Alia Bhatt as a revelation] accidently gets abducted by a murderous gang of goons largely dealing in petty illegal practices of land-grabbing & mugging on highways. Realizing the fact that the father is a hot-shot industrialist having his connections rooted in powerful politics and that their unplanned abduction could turn things on their own; they, especially the leading man here cold-hearted Mahavir Bhati [Randeep Hooda proving his comfort, ability and confidence in playing the character] decides to stick with the plan. Not knowing where it could get them both, starts the road-trip through scenic, rustic, mystic locales of North India.

Fans would agree that Imtiaz’s films have always been loud about life’s very existence despite its own flaws and imperfections but here silence speaks more. So, most of the times all you hear is submissive background score by AR Rahman filling in to the subjective road-shots captured from behind the front glass of the truck. Characters here have deeper secrets from pasts. Veera is a victim of incestuous child abuse. Mahavir has seen a tormented childhood where his father would throw his mother into sexual favors to his rich & powerful master. Sure you haven’t expected all that in an easygoing Imtiaz Film. Sure you wanted to get entertained with all candy floss romance and not some harsh reality that speaks how women are unsafe even if they are in considerably the most secured place for them called home. So, disappointment comes easy for you.

What you can not have any iota of uncertainty on is the performances. Alia Bhatt is a surprise packet of the film. The presence, effortlessness, confidence she shows is extremely rare for anyone who’s just one film old in the line of work. She’s beautiful and she acts the same way. Randeep Hooda sinks his teeth into the rugged, rigid, vigorously ferocious character of Mahavir. Watch him in his final outburst as he hesitates to go on the crossroad that could either take him to a better world filled with love & affection or could throw him back in the pit of crime and hatred.

Breathtaking visuals, grasping soundtrack, juicy dialogues and performances that will never leave you alone even after leaving the theatre; HIGHWAY has it all but not for all. With the portions with docu-drama style of shooting, extended shots, rhythmic travelling footage, reduced usage of dialogues; it is not an easy film to watch. It’s different. It’s dark. It’s one of those that add up your expectations. I am all excited to see what next Imtiaz Ali could come with! Recommended! [3.5/5]
