कटियाबाज़: ड्रामा, एक्शन, इमोशन…सब असली है! [3.5/5]

कहानियाँ जो ज़िंदगी की सच्चाई से निकली हों, काल्पनिक कथाओं से कहीं बेहतर, कहीं रोचक होती हैं. रत्ती भर का बनावटीपन नहीं और कहीं भी पकड़ छूटने या बनाये रखने का दबाव नहीं. बस छोड़ दीजिये अपने आप को और बहते रहिये एक ऐसे बहाव में, जिस से आप अछूते नहीं हैं. जिसकी रवानगी कहीं न कहीं आपके ज़ेहन में कैद है, ज़िंदा है. हालांकि 'कटियाबाज़' कानपुर से ताल्लुक रखती एक डाक्यूमेंटरी ड्रामा है, पर ऐसा नहीं है कि आप बड़े शहरों में रहते हों और इस तरह के हालात से बिलकुल ही परिचित न हों.

कानपुर, जो कभी 'भारत का मैनचेस्टर' कहा जाता था, आज बिजली कटौती की भयंकर समस्या से जूझ रहा है. गर्मियों में 45 डिग्री तक पारा पहुँचने वाले इस शहर में 16-18 घंटे तक की बिजली कटौती होती है और व्यवस्था की इस नाकामी से लोगों को जो थोड़ी बहुत राहत मिलती है, उसका सर्वेसर्वा है, कटियाबाज़ी का उस्ताद लोहा सिंह! कटियाबाज़ यानि गैर कानूनी तरीके से बिजली की चोरी के लिए तार जोड़ने का हुनर जानने वाला! लोहा सिंह को मौत छू भी नहीं सकती (उसका मानना है कि तार जोड़ते वक़्त वह अपनी साँसे रोक लेता है और इसीलिए मौत उसे पहले से ही मरा जान कर छोड़ जाती है), लोहा सिंह को व्यवस्था से भी कोई डर नहीं! लोहा सिंह एक ठिगना सा आम आदमी ही क्यों न हो, आप को उसमें बॉलीवुड के तक़रीबन-तकरीबन सारे एंटी-हीरोज़ की झलक देखने को मिल जायेगी। तो अगर लोहा सिंह फिल्म का एंटी-हीरो है, हीरो कौन है? कानपुर बिजली सप्लाई कंपनी की नयी मैनेजिंग डायरेक्टर रितु माहेश्वरी बिजली चोरी रोकने में कोई कसर छोड़ना नहीं चाहती। कानपुर जैसे शहर में, और कानपुर ही क्यों? ऐसे हर शहर में जहां लोग जरूरत की सारी सुविधाएं मुफ्त में लेने को मरे जाते हों, ये नामुकिन सा ही लगता है.

फ़हाद मुस्तफ़ा और दीप्ति कक्कड़ की 'कटियाबाज़' उन चंद डॉक्यूमेंटरी फिल्मों में से है, जिनमें मनोरंजन और ड्रामा की भरपूर गुंजाइश है. सच्ची घटनाओं को एक सुगढ़ नाटकीय तरीके से पेश करने की उम्दा कोशिश! प्रसिद्द म्यूज़िक बैंड 'इण्डियन ओसीन' का गंवई अंदाज़ और उस पर वरुण ग्रोवर के ठेठ गीत एकदम सटीक बैठते हैं, फिल्म के कथानक और उसके मूड के हिसाब से. फिल्म में ऐसे मजेदार दृश्यों की भरमार है जो आपको शायद ही किसी बॉलीवुड फिल्म में देखने को मिलें, मसलन बिजली चोरी रोकने के लिए बनाया गया स्क्वाड जो कटिया के तारों को बाकायदा सबूत की तरह सँभालते दिखते हैं. पर 'कटियाबाज़' को एक बेहतर फिल्म बनाती है उसकी संवेदनशीलता, एक तगड़ी पकड़ उन इमोशंस पर जो शायद हम देखना भी नहीं चाहते! एक दबंग नेता के चलते जब रितु माहेश्वरी का तबादला हो जाता है और लोग उनके विदाई समारोह में उनकी प्रशंसा के गीत गा रहे होते हैं, गुलदस्तों के ढेर के बीच बैठी एक नेक नीयत आईएएस अफसर के अंदर का खालीपन आपको अंदर तक कचोट जाता है. ऐसा ही कुछ फिल्म के अंत में देखने को मिलता है, जब शराब के देसी ठेके पर लोहा सिंह को उसकी कटियाबाज़ी के काम के लिए दुत्कार मिलती है. फिल्म के ये दोनों किरदार कभी आपस में मिलते नहीं, पर एक-दूसरे से जाने-अनजाने काफी कुछ बांटते हैं.

'कटियाबाज़' 85 मिनट की सिर्फ एक फिल्म नहीं है, 'कटियाबाज़' हम सबकी ज़िंदगी का एक हिस्सा है जहां ड्रामा, एक्शन, इमोशन सब असल का है. अगर आपको लगता है डॉक्यूमेंटरी सिर्फ कुछ चुनिंदा, बहुत ही संजीदा किस्म के लोगों के लिए ही बनती और बनायीं जाती हैं, आप 'कटियाबाज़' ज़रूर देखें। ये आपकी अपनी फिल्म है और आप ही के लिए बनाई गयी है! [3.5/5] 

THE WORLD BEFORE HER: India within India! India Vs India!! [3.5/5]

Not sure of world outside our country but India is a difficult place to live for women. It has always been. Dreaming of a better & brighter future with its own share of freedom and individuality, apart from just being a good housewife and a responsible mother to as many kids is sure too much to ask for. So when a devoted member of Durga Vahini- the women wing of a Hindu fundamentalist group, Prachi Trivedi thanks her uncompromising, dominating and often abusive father for letting her be alive in this world, it definitely breaks your heart in pieces.

But that’s very minuscule; the bigger picture is way ahead. Grass always looks greener on the other side but things are not easier for Ruhi Singh also who belongs to a much supportive middle-class but modern family of Jaipur and is now a potential contestant at Miss India pageant. With these two different individual identities and their vastly distinguished worlds, Nisha Pahuja presents THE WORLD BEFORE HER- an absolutely amazing, powerful and emotive documentary that also entertains at large.

To show the aspirations, dreams and hopes of today’s Indian women, THE WORLD BEFORE HER handpicks two complete contrast characters and throws light on their lives under sheets. Prachi Trivedi of Aurangabad is a firm & fearless believer of Hindutva who could never blink or think twice before killing anyone against her religion or country. In her Durga Vahini Camp, young girls are taught the roots of Hindu culture and how one should protect it from other religions and the westernization taking it over. This is one Hindustan as they say. Defensive, panicky and regressively alarmed against the inevitable change world is bringing into itself!

On the other, it is all dolled up in the best of make-up & dresses Miss India aspirants who are dreaming to win the title in order to find themselves in the league of upgraded from ‘person to personality’. This is a manufacturing unit like set-up where products are being polished to their bests, in this case with Botox sessions, skin whitening treatments, extensive diction & personality booster tutorials and what not. In one deeply disturbing sequence, they all are made to parade in a sack covering their heads and upper torsos only to decide who’s been blessed with the best of legs.

Prachi and Ruhi’s worlds never really cross their paths but collide at all stages in terms of their cultural orientations, mental beliefs and personal choices in life. THE WORLD BEFORE HER honestly, impressively and without being critical to anyone specific puts the both on our table to dissect with our own receptivity and agree or disagree to either later. A very very important film! And yes, documentaries can also be entertaining. This one is a neat example! Do not miss it. [3.5/5]     

GULABI GANG: Deeply disturbing, shocking yet entertaining! Recommended!! [4/5]

More than 3 hours and I am still feeling suffocated with an utterly devastating insight about how inhuman, ruthless and cold-blooded our society can be. Wooden faced impassive men are shamelessly trying to cover up a planned murder of a young girl to avoid legal consequences for the family in question; quoting a Ramayana stanza that reads it’s all written in the destiny and we are no one to change. There is also a mother who doesn’t blink in doubts while confessing that she would totally understand the intensity of the crime if their sons could kill their own sister for dishonoring the family by marrying a man of her own choice. If this all looks or sounds an exaggerated dramatized plot of some thriller, let me pinch, punch and shake you up to the harsh reality we are in.

Nishtha Jain’s shockingly real GULABI GANG is packed with such shameful episodes and each one makes me feel like crying out loud over our dying empathy for humanity but that’s not all. There is a ray of hope too and in the courageous name of Sampat Pal, the founder lady of a pink clad women group aka the Gulabi Gang.

In the Bundelkhand Region, Sampat Pal runs an organization at her own to help women fight against crime. We all have seen her in a reality show on Indian television. We all, at some point have laughed at her overtly simple behavior but here, she beats us all and emerges as one of most determined, powerful and extremely concerned social worker. She can smell the fishy. She can make things in process. She can talk unhesitantly for the right. With her gang of 15000+ members, she does ‘dharna’ and ‘hunger strike’ against the powerful and corrupts. She leads, guides, educates and empowers the suppressed women around her. She shows us to be the voice for a change in this conservative, regressive and thoroughly patriarchy ruling power of men.

Nishtha Jain brilliantly documents the workings of the gang. From capturing the all burnt into ashes body of the girl murdered to questioning the local police in charge for their inactivity in filing the case, she actively participates as an earnest investigative partaker. Watch out for a shot where camera shows villagers of all ages gathered to witness the event but don’t really want to be vocal about and start moving out to leave the frame empty at the end.

Documentaries are known to be dead factual and less entertaining but GULABI GANG is sure an exception. If it makes you cringe with deeply disturbing truth of our society, fuming over your helplessness to bring some change and feel extremely sensitive about the sufferings women are facing in some part of our country not very far from where we are, it also fills you with its sheer proportion of entertainment. For instance; in an incident, as Sampat Pal recollects, one uninformed lady was told to give her vote on the symbol ‘Chair’ of course on the ballot paper but she ended up putting stamp over a wooden chair nearby and the mistake got repeated for more than 50 times for the women next in line. Ironic but entertaining!

Overall, there can never be a pretext why one should not watch it. We may not have time to spare from our ‘comforted’ life schedules. We may have our own priorities in life to make it better but trust me; this is bigger than yours and definitely not something out of this world. A little concern and some acknowledgement will do much in restoring the humanity in us. A must-watch! [4/5]
