FAST & FURIOUS 7 : Not a Fab-watch but a Fan-watch! [3/5]

There is hardly anything that has some sorts of ‘ground-connect’ in James Wan’s FAST & FURIOUS 7, neither cars nor the plot! Still, this time it ain’t just about being fast. Following the frenzy trends of the franchise; you don’t actually need to demand inventive ideas of thrilling action, high-octane sequences of car chase, thumping explosions that could wreck the whole city down including the most beautiful skyscrapers or even the glam-dolls clad in their barely-there shorts. It’s all there by design but what gives this ride an evocative momentum is the emotionally charged-up underlying melancholy coming from the fact that one of the members in the gang, Paul Walker is not there with us anymore. And James Wan brilliantly treats and tweaks it with the help of his brothers to make it a worth ‘bid adieu’ for the star; and for the fans too.

Deckard Shaw [Jason Statham] enters as the big bad brother of Owen Shaw [of and from the sixth installment of the franchise] seeking vengeance from the gang responsible for putting his kid-brother on death-table. The gang is busy getting their lives on track when the terror knocks their doors. Before they could even smell it, Han is killed in Tokyo and Hobbs [Dwayne Johnson] is sent to ICU. Toretto [Vin Diesel] with Brian [Paul Walker], Letty [Michelle Rodriguez] and others has to join hands with Mr. Nobody [Kurt Russell] to take down this almost ‘impossible to track’ baddie. Their hope lies in a hacker named Ramsey [Nathalie Emmanuel] with a ‘track it all’ software. Now, fill this unhygienic and regular storyline with as much earth-shattering explosions as you could, head-on-head car collisions and hard-to-digest gravity-defying stunts [in one, Diesel slams his car into three high-rise buildings of Abu Dhabi, piercing one after the other and making it the most incredible stunt in the skies].

FAST & FURIOUS 7 stays true to its genre. Luring men with the glamorous speed-machines and sensational beauties in bikinis! The plentiful of thrillride scarcely gives you enough time to think over the logical explanation lacking largely in the plot. The villain here is often described as untraceable but then, he is there in every frame without actually having any cover to his existence. The gang can perform free fall car-stunts from any given altitude and can escape safely without having a noticeable scar. Meanwhile, the world’s most celebrated cities are being turned into trashbins after grave blasts and there is no sign of alarmed populace. Anyways, who would notice and why if the adrenaline rush required and promised is there intact?

Film surprisingly gets into emotional mode several times, breaking its successful modus operandi for past six offerings; mostly when Paul Walker gets himself into a death-defying stunt [The actor lost his life in a speeding car-accident similar to the movies in this franchise]. And then, this ‘one last ride’ ends in the highly touching sequence where Paul Walker’s character gets recreated with computer-graphics and his two of brothers of similar inherited looks. Beautifully conceived tribute to the star! Watch it for being exciting, exhilarating and emotionally more involved. If not a fab watch, it is sure a fan watch! [3/5]

P.S. : Indian actor Ali Fazal of 3 IDIOTS fame can also be seen in an evident cameo. It feels great to see him sharing screen space with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.

BOBBY JASOOS: Vidya overpowers this less-Jasoosi thriller! [3/5]

Hyderabad has not been the backdrop of many Bollywood films but a few very relevant ones like Sagar Sarhadi’s BAZAAR; so when promos of BOBBY JASOOS made a suggestion of it being positioned completely in the same city of its own flavors, an apprehension got fixed in my head. Will the typical Hyderabadi lingo and the lehza work or else it would be just another laughing stock stuck in its stereotype treatment? Now that I have seen it, I can say my doubts didn’t get proper ground to prosper. Debutante director Samar Shaikh’s BOBBY JASOOS belongs to two, one being Hyderabad itself and the second is Vidya Balan, often pronounced as the HERO of her films. BOBBY JASOOS in fact, is a complete shocker mostly not because it is a thriller but as an emotional Indian drama that asks important questions about our male-ruled society. Why can a profession like private investigation not picked up by a girl? Why Kitty always has to a dumb assistant and not a smart challenger to Karamchand in her own way?

Coming from a middle class Hyderabadi Muslim family where father [Rajendra Gupta] arrogantly announces that he doesn’t need his daughter’s money to run the house, Bilquis aka Bobby [Vidya] dares to chase her dream of being a popular private detective. Flooded with petty cases of gathering information about people’s personal affairs, Bobby is waiting to hit the jackpot with something big and it comes to her as Anees Khan [Veteran Kiran Kumar] - a rich man in search of a missing girl with least information to follow. Stunned in the flashes of money involved, little she remembers the basics of the profession. Get your hands clean on the client first!

BOBBY JASOOS beautifully and in its most authentic manner captures the core of middle class houses. The extended families with father’s sister [Tanve Azmi in one such] and her daughters live and breathe with ease, ‘Sehri’ and ‘Iftaar’ being performed together since it is a Ramadan month, father being the dominating force and kids hardly can put their view-points! The best part is you are never bombarded with forced Hyderabadi dialect but it is well-crafted in the story and subtly performed. Even in their shortest of time on screen, actors like Rajendra Gupta as the controlling father, Supriya Pathak Kapoor as Bobby’s Mother, Tanve Azmi as the Kausar Khaala who’s kind of a marriage counselor to everybody and anybody comes across, Arjan Bajwa, Zarina Wahab, Akash Dahiya and Kiran Kumar in his comeback sort leave the demanded and deserving impact. Ali Fazal is a revelation. He has done well in a couple of movies after 3 IDIOTS but this one establishes him as a charming performer. Spare me for saying it but his dialogue delivery at places reminds me of Naseer saab’s.

And now, the Vidya Balan! Vidya has always been targeting scripts and roles that ascertains full just to her acting potential. The writing here sure can’t be judged at par her earlier selections but still, she manages to pull it out brilliantly. There is no way you complain a scene Vidya is in. Don’t fool yourself by expecting a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ thriller out of it, but this first Bollywood woman detective sure shows flare of emotions you’ll feel connected to. Watch it for Vidya! [3/5]

FUKREY: very DILLI at heart! not to be missed!!

Dilli, not the elite Delhi mind you, has become quite a hot favorite these days for most of the filmmakers to set their films up, not only to explore the quirkiness in the lingo and the defiance of its overly flamboyant characters but also as an integral intimate essence to the story-line.  You can take out a Delhiite from Delhi but you can never the Delhi from a Delhiite...that's the attitude that holds you and keeps you glued to your seats throughout (though allegedly this statement is incorrect since it being a laugh riot experience, you are bound to jump over it most of the time) while watching Mrighdeep Singh Lamba's FUKREY.

Vaguely termed for youth, charged with intrepid gusto to achieve their goals by any means aboveboard or overboard, ‘fukrey’ is probably the only word what could describe its characters. The way their body traffics towards girls passing by, the way they are vigorously ready to take on anyone including friends of lifetime even in their hardest times, the way they think whatever they do is the new cool thing, is very very enjoyable.

Spending your 134 mins with these 4 youngsters (BITTOO BOSS fame Pulkit Samrat, Manjot Singh of ‘OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE’, Ali Jafar- the ‘sunshine’ guitarist in 3 IDIOTS and the hilariously funny first-timer Varun Sharma) are now at their own to come out of the problem they are trapped into because of shortcuts taken in life to earn some big loads of money, is like taking a short vacation for measurable amount of laughs and smiles. This roller coaster also has a couple of the most competent actors Bollywood hasn't paid much attention to till very late (the impeccably impressive Pankaj Tripathi as the 'can do everything' watchman of the college and the awesomely gifted Richa Chaddha as the local lady don) performing with sheer brilliance for equally well written characters.

Lamba has shown us previously some nice flares of good situational comedy in his overlooked debut '3 THAY BHAI' but this is definitely a far better- near perfect addition to his kitty. Vipul Vig is another star behind camera responsible for the story and madcap dialogues with wackiest one-liners. Make it a must in your ‘to do’ list for the weekend. Laughter is guaranteed so is an entertainment that brings out the youth in you. I haven't laughed and clapped so much, so for in 2013. Don't miss it even if you haven't been in Delhi before, all your life. Some scenes sure demand repeat watch! (3.5/5)
