(Small in Size, Big on Content)

A simple, unpretentious and wide-eyed country boy is trying to be apologetic to the girl he’s been with all night under the same sheet. Local liquor brand can be held responsible but the girl is taken aback, “Sorry? What for?” “For everything”, the boy is in deep guilt. “Not for everything. Say sorry only for why you left me alone there.” The girl is definitely more independent, free and open, and emotionally less complicated. So is Shefali Bhushan’s JUGNI. It likes to have its own sense of rhythm with melodies that induce extreme likeness and energy in you to match up with the beats life throws at you.

SAALA KHADOOS charms you with the uninhibited, wild and fresh performance by Ritika Singh, a professional boxer before making her first attempt at acting. Her free-spirited, loud-mouthed and all moody role-play is efficiently delightful.

Madhavan gives SAALA KHADOOS everything it demands from him. He looks every bit of a full-grown ex-boxer with all the attitude, arrogance and aggression in him, hitting the right cord. One of his highly approving works!

LAAL RANG is a good thriller that may not pump your heartbeat up in the usual way most of bollywood thrillers do. It also might not give you much of a pulsating action to cheer, and it definitely would not pitch obligatory twists & turns in the plot but even then, the firm writing has enough to make it an enjoyably unlike experience.

Syed Ahmad Afzal makes sure it takes its own course of time to grow on the viewers. He never looks in hurry when establishing scenes or while making the shift from one to another.

TERAA SURROOR: The Himesh ‘Horror’ Reshammiya Show! [1/5]

The most ironical part in Himesh Reshammiya starrer TERAA SURROOR is also the most amusing part yet so not an agreeable statement to make. Himesh gets to play a ‘Bharat ka beta’ with a heart of gold. He used to sell Chai once in his childhood while battling with poverty. He involuntarily gets enraged with so much aggression that he pierces the chest of a gangster with bullet-driven holes when the latter makes lewd remarks involving his Maa.

Years pass. Himesh is now a Modi-fied young man with newly developed chiseled body and all expressionless wooden face. He’s seen giving tough time to ‘gore angrej’ in a verbal spat over India and Indians being targeted as the incredibly incompetent. He flaunts his Desi Tamancha made in Azamgarh smugly in Dublin to represent and rest his case; and leaves the premise in such swag that most pseudo nationalists will rise up and start saluting and waving Indian flags if allowed. Wait, there is more. He never forgets to make his enemies citing ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ before he could take his final shots at them. What the puking patriotism!

TERAA SURROOR is apparently being pushed as a sequel to Reshammiya’s AAP KA SURROOR (2007). It is not but only when Reshammiya uses some of the head-thrashing songs from the previous. Tara [Farah Karimee] has been booked by cops for the act of drug possession in Dublin, Ireland. Her beau Raghu [Himesh] needs to find a way to rescue her and to trace the unidentifiable man behind all this. Enter Elle Jordan [Monica Dogra]- a lawyer, an Indian official at the embassy [Shekhar Kapoor] and a seasoned conman in prison Robin Santino [Naseer Saab] fondly called as ‘the bird’ for his 14 successful attempts at prison break! Together they all try to help Raghu in his mission and also the film in getting some kind of gravity. I wish they had not been overshadowed by the one and only Himesh Reshammiya!

While tasting your endurance for nearly 2 hours, you often find yourself in a tight spot to decide who irritates you the most; Himesh- the actor or Himesh- the composer. Both have their pros and cons to their individual (ir)responsibilities. Himesh never really bothers you as an actor. He certainly is not one at the first place. He never tries to wear too many varied emotions on his face to impress, though the shades on his lips do magnetize your attention. His self-possessed tunes and the background score by the master himself make sure you don’t miss out a single frame in the film. I made serious efforts to take a quick refreshing nap in between but the hammering beats, earsplitting sounds and eerie singing will never let you be successful in your thoughts.

In rest of the cast, Karimee has nothing to impress. She is smartly given a lesser number of dialogues to mouth and it appears bliss in many ways. Shekhar Kapoor charms as good as Naseeruddin Shah. Where Kapoor shows off his ease and delightful presence on screen, Naseer Saab does quite a job as an interesting cameo. Shernaz Patel and Kabir Bedi are good. In an attention-grabbing portrayal, the villain of the film [He only surfaces at the end] plays a new musical instrument every time he appears on screen. Each time I wanted and wished him to be a real life competitor of Himesh disapproving his success and guts to bounce back with an unabashed self-praising attitude! Could have been a real joke!

Overall, I might have gifted you many spoilers from the plot of the film but the real spoiler is the one who spoils your very idea of entertainment i. e. the unstoppable, the unbearable and the uniquely annoying Himesh Reshammiya. He can seriously trouble you for nights with his hugely haunting ‘O huzoor, tera tera teraa surrrooor!’ Beware, he’s there waiting for you in the dark! Visit at your own risk! [1/5]

SHAANDAAR: Epic fail! [1.5/5]

Learn the rules before you choose to unlearn everything and make as many mistakes as you could never afford earlier. Is this the new addition in the rulebook for filmmakers in Bollywood? If not so, I fear there has to be some scam as how and why Vikas Bahl would choose a flawed, faulty and fire-less script like SHAANDAAR for his next after the all brave, bold and one of the best films in recent times QUEEN. Has creative complacency hit the talent in question? I hope not but SHAANDAAR is a discouraging example of ‘you never go in a memorial service to just admire the beauty of the coffin’; unless you are in a black humor production which even SHAANDAAR is supposedly not.

With SHAANDAAR, Vikas Bahl tries to show us what fate the candy-floss cinema of Disney would meet if made in Bollywood. The only fact he probably forgets midway that Disney itself has tasted the same flavor of disappointment in their first foray, most would not love to remember as KHOOBSURAT starring Sonam Kapoor. Bahl transports the viewers straight from the all relatable Janakpuri in Delhi [where QUEEN was located] to some fancy and fairy place of vast green lawns, serene lakes dipped in blue moonlight and cosmic castles on the likes of Czech historical architecture.

The plot itself is hugely borrowed, traditional and uncomplicated but a perfect in all probability for a fairytale romantic film. An insomniac orphan is brought into an overcast house where everyone lives under the dark shadow of a controlling, scheming and evil old lady [the veteran Sushma Seth]. 20 years down the line, the orphan Alia [Alia Bhatt] still gets consoled by her father [Pankaj Kapoor] that someday, someone will come in her life to make her sleep. The prince charming enters as the wedding planner Jagjinder Jogindar [Shahid Kapoor] for the other daughter of the house [Sanah Kapoor]. Now, this wedding chaos sees the gold-obsessed Fundwani [Sanjay Kapoor] with his gym-loving dumbbell brother-cum-groom making it all a business deal with the old-lady. Both the families are on the edge of bankruptcy and see the other as the only hope for their survival.

Vikas Bahl beautifully introduces the elements of fine animation to tell the story whenever it decides to travel in flashback. Those three chunks of animated part are so impressive, well-designed and technically clean that you wish it lasts for the rest two hours also, of the total duration of the film. The screenplay and the dialogues [by Anvita Dutt] are totally uneven, patchy and distasteful. The orphan being not an orphan but an illegitimate child is never a revelation. And why it has to be a fact always maintained in a Bollywood film that the male designer will be a gay in hideout? Bahl earned respects of all sorts for bringing out the undiscovered layers in today’s women’s personality and with such boldness that one feels proud to have someone so gutsy but here, his female characters are either too strong-headed or in too compromising position. A plump, curvy and bulky bride to be is teased continuously for obvious reasons but waits for her father and the large-hearted prince to intervene. Sometimes, just one slap on screen ensures scores of claps inside the theater! You missed it, Mr. Bahl!

With Pankaj Kapoor, Shahid and his sister Sanah in one frame, SHAANDAAR is more interesting family affair off-screen than on-screen. The sparkling chemistry between the three Kapoors is cheering. Sanah impresses with her first acting sting and her lovely and lively presence on screen. Alia is a complete show-stealer. The innocence she brings with her matches the emotional need of the character. Niki Walia captures your attention in her comeback. Sanjay Kapoor’s being there can only be seen as a justification of budget issues to cast Anil Kapoor.

Overall, SHAANDAAR remains Vikas Bahl’s over-ambitious, forgettable and flawed expedition to the corrupt commercial world of box-office driven success where content takes back seat and the canvas holds the steering wheel. An epic fail! [1.5/5]

WELCOME BACK: Partly funny-largely frustrating! [2/5]

Anees Bazmee’s WELCOME BACK is a time-machine that takes you in the times of its successful predecessor WELCOME (2007). The moment it takes off, you come to realize that nothing have moved an inch in all these 7-8 years; neither the silliness in the plot nor the sensibility of the director. A girl, despite having strong and extreme dislike for ‘goondas’ gets kissed by one belonging to the same genus and ends up singing and dancing a romantic number with him, without showing any apprehension. This is a crass world where everyone makes a joke on everyone’s looks, features and physical stances irrespective of their gender, age and class. All in the name of entertainment! All for the sake of cheap laughs! Some really work but in the tiring 2 hour and 33 minutes of its total duration, most fall on the face. WELCOME BACK remains a terrible try to reproduce and recreate the box-office magic WELCOME (2007) created long back; which by now, looks like a classic in comparison with this partly funny-largely frustrating flick.

The furious Uday Shetty [Nana Patekar] and the fanatic Majnu Bhai [Anil Kapoor] are looking for a simple, sober and sophisticated groom again for their brand new sister Ranjana [Shruti Haasan]. The search takes them back to Dr. Ghoongroo [Paresh Rawal] whose newly-find son Ajay [John Abraham] loves Ranjana. Now if you are scratching your head to know where these new additions have come from, let me give you a hint. ‘The dark secrets of a happy married life’. Anyways, the trouble in the proposed marriage happens to be the groom himself. Ajay is actually Ajju Bhai- a local don in Mumbai. Things go messy when an international mafia Wanted Bhai [Naseeruddin Shah] makes an entry with his drug-addict son [Shiney Ahuja] wanting to marry Ajay’s love interest and Uday-Majnu’s sister. Meanwhile, there is a con mother-daughter duo [Dimple Kapadia & Ankita Shrivastava] to make it more muddled and mixed-up.

WELCOME BACK is majorly backed by the Nana Patekar-Anil Kapoor combination. Together, they live every moment in the film with total conviction and wholesome energy. Although Bazmee relies more on the third-rate giggles out of unapologetic comments on everyone’s appearances like Anil Kapoor is called ‘Tedhe Kandhe’ because of his leaning body posture, Supriya Karnik’s character is cursed for her hairstyle with ‘boy-cut halkat’ comment etc. The list includes blinds, deafs and dumbs, overweights and what not. The background music constantly hammers on your hearing senses with a completely unbearable chorus-intro for every major character. Sub-plots are added just to complicate the storyline and to make it overcrowded to create a chaotic climax where you can easily fall for the trick and get ready to accept anything that comes on the way to finally end it all. The logics get its high when a blind don gains his eyesight after his head gets banged in a fight. Similarly, the hero manages to run on the humps of running camels to save a life.

In a very few mentionable sequences, Nana and Anil supposedly play Antakshari with ghosts in a graveyard. In other, Rajpal Yadav impresses in a scene where he’s beaten by goons but forced to dance while being in the middle of it. Paresh Rawal is watchable but Dimple, Ankita & Shruti are not even that. John carries off it well. The addition of Naseeruddin Shah to the cast was supposed to recreate the magical presence of Late Feroz Khan but ends up being in an uncomfortable zone. Shiney Ahuja seems out of the place all the time.

Overall, WELCOME BACK is an old and predictable, long and tiring joke. Some of the performances do make it watchable but the lack of smart writing-clever punches-logical explanations, and idiocy in the storyline kills the fun and the pun both. If WELCOME had amused you, this will annoy you. [2/5]

FINDING FANNY (ENGLISH): ‘Finding it funny’ is an understatement! [3.5/5]

Early in the collective journey to find the love of an old loner’s life; when the later reacts in anxiety, ‘Isn’t it hot today?’, the man on driving seat and with the least interest in such trip throws away his apathy, “I am feeling cold”…“You must be in fever then” “no, it’s a statement of sarcasm”, he clarifies straight-faced & boldly. That should also be the preliminary and precautionary declaration to viewers as what they should expect from Homi Adajania’s smartly written, deliciously performed and dynamically directed comedy-drama FINDING FANNY.

Set in an unreal-unheard village of Goa, Fredie [Naseeruddin Shah, tastes as good as old wine] is a lonesome postman with no letters to deliver. His life gets an awakening knock when someone drops an old undelivered letter to his doorstep. It was written by him 46 years back and for his love of life then, Fanny. It is an end to his years-long wait but to give it a possible fresh new start to find Fanny, there’s Angie [Deepika Padukone as bright & shine as the morning Sun] who, despite her 15 min-short married life firmly believes in, “No one deserves an incomplete love-story”.

There’s also Angie’s heavily-structured crabby-grumpy old mother-in-law Rosalina [Dimple Kapadia in an all juicy-spicy avatar], a bitter, harsh & sulking love-interest to Angie [Arjun Kapoor’s best till date] and last but never the least, the amazingly vibrant but lecherous womanizer artist in search of a new muse for his painting, Don Pedro Cleto Colaco [The powerhouse and an institution in himself Pankaj Kapoor]. Together, they all are on a ride to find love in their lives.

FINDING FANNY is dark-dim & gloomy in emotions where every character is either with broken hearts or in deep abandoned state of mind seeking the missing piece in their lives but the way they behave and presented on screen is very caricature-ish yet far more realistic than any Bollywood mainstream cinema. So, there is plenty of room for humor that comes from the wit in the nature of being that character and belonging there in the said situation. Point to be noted here is that you have to be very attentive and alert to not miss any of the punches hidden or underlined in any regular verbal exchange. Special mention to the writer!

The lingo is rooted, earthy and well in-synced with the spirit of English speaking Goan people. Anil Mehta’s visual strokes are like travel postcards. The old houses with fences, bricky textures, neatly stuffed rooms with furniture and props slowly getting into antique mode and picturesque landscapes of Konkan belt are vividly captured. Mathias Duplessy’s tingling music constantly keeps you engaged in the scene. And if not anything, the performances will floor you right away. Naseer’s cute smiles, Pankaj’s lustful eyes, Arjun’s burst of anger, Deepika’s naive beauty and Dimple’s richly layered emotions, there are reasons more than just one to not miss it.

After his last being a 100 Cr club entrance (Deepika-Saif starrer COCKTAIL), FINDING FANNY is like Homi’s homecoming to what he had promised with his first (BEING CYRUS). No non-sense performances, grave humor and a good hand at writing. It is easily one of the most refreshing films you’ve seen this year! [3.5/5]

BOBBY JASOOS: Vidya overpowers this less-Jasoosi thriller! [3/5]

Hyderabad has not been the backdrop of many Bollywood films but a few very relevant ones like Sagar Sarhadi’s BAZAAR; so when promos of BOBBY JASOOS made a suggestion of it being positioned completely in the same city of its own flavors, an apprehension got fixed in my head. Will the typical Hyderabadi lingo and the lehza work or else it would be just another laughing stock stuck in its stereotype treatment? Now that I have seen it, I can say my doubts didn’t get proper ground to prosper. Debutante director Samar Shaikh’s BOBBY JASOOS belongs to two, one being Hyderabad itself and the second is Vidya Balan, often pronounced as the HERO of her films. BOBBY JASOOS in fact, is a complete shocker mostly not because it is a thriller but as an emotional Indian drama that asks important questions about our male-ruled society. Why can a profession like private investigation not picked up by a girl? Why Kitty always has to a dumb assistant and not a smart challenger to Karamchand in her own way?

Coming from a middle class Hyderabadi Muslim family where father [Rajendra Gupta] arrogantly announces that he doesn’t need his daughter’s money to run the house, Bilquis aka Bobby [Vidya] dares to chase her dream of being a popular private detective. Flooded with petty cases of gathering information about people’s personal affairs, Bobby is waiting to hit the jackpot with something big and it comes to her as Anees Khan [Veteran Kiran Kumar] - a rich man in search of a missing girl with least information to follow. Stunned in the flashes of money involved, little she remembers the basics of the profession. Get your hands clean on the client first!

BOBBY JASOOS beautifully and in its most authentic manner captures the core of middle class houses. The extended families with father’s sister [Tanve Azmi in one such] and her daughters live and breathe with ease, ‘Sehri’ and ‘Iftaar’ being performed together since it is a Ramadan month, father being the dominating force and kids hardly can put their view-points! The best part is you are never bombarded with forced Hyderabadi dialect but it is well-crafted in the story and subtly performed. Even in their shortest of time on screen, actors like Rajendra Gupta as the controlling father, Supriya Pathak Kapoor as Bobby’s Mother, Tanve Azmi as the Kausar Khaala who’s kind of a marriage counselor to everybody and anybody comes across, Arjan Bajwa, Zarina Wahab, Akash Dahiya and Kiran Kumar in his comeback sort leave the demanded and deserving impact. Ali Fazal is a revelation. He has done well in a couple of movies after 3 IDIOTS but this one establishes him as a charming performer. Spare me for saying it but his dialogue delivery at places reminds me of Naseer saab’s.

And now, the Vidya Balan! Vidya has always been targeting scripts and roles that ascertains full just to her acting potential. The writing here sure can’t be judged at par her earlier selections but still, she manages to pull it out brilliantly. There is no way you complain a scene Vidya is in. Don’t fool yourself by expecting a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ thriller out of it, but this first Bollywood woman detective sure shows flare of emotions you’ll feel connected to. Watch it for Vidya! [3/5]

JACKPOT: Poker faced entertainment! Promises everything, offers nothing! [.5/5]

Earlier in the film; when being questioned by a sluggish, lethargically slow-spoken cop played by the theatrical Makrand Deshpande, Naseeruddin Shah is seen with the name of Ram Gopal Varma on the board in the backdrop, I sink in my deep confusion if that was done in good gesture to show a great respect to the filmmaker or it was just a pun intended because this baffling camel sits neither of the sides.

The comedy con thriller ‘JACKPOT’ marks a long-awaited comeback of Kaizad Gustad- a filmmaker who, despite giving ‘Dud of the Decade’ BOOM, had shown great promises as a new-wave filmmaker [of then, at least] with his violently witty BOMBAY BOYS well before the ‘Anurag Kashyap Phenomenon’ came in to the scene. Sadly, JACKPOT disappoints at all fronts. It misses the magical touch of Gustad that used to bring the underworld in light in the most ‘unexplored before’ maniac manner. It also fails to impress with an amateurish approach in film-making.

Set in the mysteriously drugged nature of Goa, 4 con artists [Sachin Joshi & Sunny Leone plays two of them] induce a 250 Cr land-deal to the owner of the biggest casino in the city [played by Naseeruddin Shah in his weirdly ‘rope like hair strings’ getup] but in order to get things in process, they also must win the yearly poker game of 5 Cr Jackpot organized on Shah’s cruiser. They get succeeded but not the way it was planned. Now, the jackpot money is missing and everyone involved believes others are done with it. Does it not sound familiar with most of the con films? Well, even that can be overlooked if the screenplay takes the lead and provides breathtaking twists and turns to let loose your thinking horses all the time.

In the countable-on-fingers merits if I think hard, there is an impressive opening credits inspired by 007 Bond movie title sequences. Though it creates only some false conjecture to what it may come to you in next 90 minutes, it is a well-thought, nicely done part. I also can not agree more on that the duration was defiantly a big & decisive pro for me. Cinematography is strictly ok. Some one-liners are witty and remind you of the Kaizad Gustad of late 90’s but I don’t see reasons for what songs were doing in the midst of this entire supposedly crisp thriller.

For the performances, I would say you are looking for wrong thing at the wrong place. Sachin Joshi is probably the worst looking hero in recent times. He impressed most with his action sequences in AZAAN but here he depresses everyone with his unkempt, messy look and equally bad dialogue delivery [He doesn’t even bother to lip-sync the song he’s performing in]. And to top it all, he is the one who narrates the story for the most part. God bless the viewers! Sunny Leone doesn’t disappoint much as she does what she does best…and I am not talking about acting. Naseeruddin Shah repeats himself. We have seen him before in such avatar. Why he needs to opt for such scripts is unconvincing.

Overall; if this is the comeback, I would like to see Gustad resting in peace wherever he was till now. This JACKPOT makes you feel loser at the end and is something that no one wants to win. Boredom is what you get out of this poker faced entertainment! [.5/5]

KRRISH 3: Unimaginative, unoriginal, borrowed and a bigger disappointment! [2/5]

If you heard something like, “agar mera yeh experiment kaamyaab ho gaya, main yeh-main woh…” you should never be in doubts that you are watching a science-fiction movie (…from Bollywood ofcourse). But thrice?...in the whole 2 hour 33 min of duration filled with inspired yet uninspiring visual effects?? Really?? Then sure you ought to have your uncertainties on gravity of the skilled writing.

In other scene, when a superhero supposedly killed by the evil returns inexplicably or rather in a scientific breakthrough too suitable to sound plausible, a kid confronts the shocked & shaken baddie played by Vivek Oberoi as, “kyun? Phat gayi kya?”. Well, the audience laughed but I couldn’t as if we really want our kids to grow in such shape. Though eventually it is a family entertainer, Rakesh Roshan’s KRRISH 3 can’t be declared sole responsible for that but definitely for being least original, least entertaining & for shamelessly taking cues from the past hits of the west. On one hand, Sr. Roshan tries to woo you with extensive visual effects never seen before in India, but also never lets his gluttony go off to encash the Indian sentimental spree. So, the plot goes for the toss in order to swing aimlessly between the both!

Krishna (Hrithik Roshan in a tailor-made role) is trying his hard to balance his life in Mumbai with his father Rohit (Jr. Roshan again in a comparatively more charming role) & wife Priya (Priyanka Chopra in a regular), between his normal routine and the disappearing ‘superhero’ acts as Krrish to save people’s lives. Meanwhile, an evil mind named Kaal (Vivek Oberoi in a menacing character interestingly modeled on the similar lines of Sir Juda in Subhash Ghai’s KARZ) is busy creating an army of MAANVARs (Mutants from the fusion of humans with animals) to rule the world and regain his powers. Rest is all about how the two clash & collide with their own set of intentions to destroy buildings, demolish towers and make people (especially viewers more than the ones on screen) suffer not only physically but mentally and emotionally too.

Theoretically, a superhero movie needs an upper hand on the VFX front. KRRISH 3 fulfills that basic rule by creating some of the unseen effects in Indian cinema but ‘is that enough’ is the biggest question. There is not one single action/ VFX sequence in the film that comes with an ‘original’ tag…and I bet if you can show me at least one! I wish if the team of writers would have sit more on the plot to make it inspiring rather than deciding on what all effects we can borrow from Hollywood Hits to thrill the audience! KOI MIL GAYA has proved in the past that if incorporated smartly in the plot, even the emotional quotient would work as a strong share of interest, but sadly here in KRRISH 3 it was all done just for the sake of it. Novelty is gone already and now the sensibility too.

On the performance side, there is no second thought on Hrithik being the crowd puller. He maintains the level he has achieved. He charms you with his intensity, his ability and his skills as a complete performer. Vivek as Kaal is strictly average. Kangna as his one of the mutants has an interesting role to pull out. She is poised. She is confident. She is promising. Priyanka Chopra incidentally has nothing new to surprise.

In an advanced world of technology, where even kids have opened all the possible windows to access latest landmarks in the said field, I am not very sure if KRRISH 3 would be able to make it to their appreciation. It only makes you believe in an unsaid rule that medium can never rule out the message, especially if it is borrowed, clichéd, corny, tacky and unimaginative. Think twice before buying your tickets!
