GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN: Where Pain replaces the Punch! [1.5/5]

Nothing hurts more than a second-rate sequel to a classic. I am not being unreasonable here with mediocre script, sloppy direction and forgettable performances; they come and go like seasons in Bollywood but how you can be so careless and recreational while even trying to replicate the magic of one of the most powerful ‘anti-system’ revenge dramas on Indian screens. If I would love to remember Rajkumar Santoshi’s GHAYAL for its sheer intensity in the hovering emotions that could turn a common man into a roaring, raging, rebellious bull, GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN for me is just a poor example of outdated, formulated and shamefully flawed filmmaking.

Ajay Mehra [Sunny Deol] has served his 16 years’ sentence for killing Balwant Rai [Amrish Puri] and now runs Satykaam- a news agency that dares to stand up against injustice of all kinds. Satykaam is more of an organized anti-crime movement with a technically sound work-base buried under ground and hundreds of activated members flaunting their ‘I am a Satykaam’ badges and stickers. Ajay is seen fighting with his reminiscences from the troubled past [in a set of weirdly conceived and poorly executed graphic visuals] until his friend-cum-admirer Joe D’Souza [Om Puri from the original cast] gets murdered. The war is inevitable between a powerful businessman [Narendra Jha] on one side and the man himself with Dhai kilo ka haath and four youngsters [They have captured the crime accidentally] on the other. And the whole city will stand still to watch the grand show.

Sunny Deol gets a deserving applaud for setting his story in a present day. The timeline of the events looks credible. Ajay Mehra has aged, but not in his anger management. The corrupt syndicate between the business world, politics and media is hinted well. One such easygoing news channel has office walls painted with famous Bollywood dialogues. I have no idea who’s on the receiving end. But that’s the only thing positive about the film. Once he decides to build a gripping story around all this, he gradually loses his sense of authenticity to the conveniently bad filmmaking.

Some films are a visual treat; GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN is a visual [graphics] disaster. Imagine Sunny Deol banging his head on the wall with exactly 5 visual windows playing old footage of GHAYAL around his head! The pain is so transmittable, I tell you. The editing jerks could be an additional chapter in any film school syllabus. At one, Sunny is trapped in a traffic jam only to appear in the very next scene controlling a hijacked helicopter. Don’t leave the theatre if it offences your intellect; wait until he rams into a skyscraper abode of the villain. Now, you can.

One of the very few watchable moments has Narendra Jha playing the influential businessman and a father in a catch-22 situation. He is no typical villain who loves to share every move with his family. He hides his drink when his little daughter shows up. He gets worried as a parent when his drug-addicted son commits murder. He is no Amrish Puri to Gulshan Grover or Dan Dhanoa. Jha proves his fitness for the part but the writing is so one-dimensional, you only have sympathies for him. Sunny Deol directs himself and makes sure he sets the screen on fire especially with the action sequences. Watching him entering into a frame running towards camera in slow-motion is the only part I can relate to the Sunny Deol of GHAYAL. For the rest, he doesn’t bring anything electrifying or amply satisfying. In fact, the scenes showing his emotional outbursts are amusingly testing.

Overall, GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN lacks the punch. The same punch that GHAYAL still manages to knock its viewers out even after 26 years in a row. The man had his own share of stardom with the film. The film deserved a better tribute from the man. [1.5/5]

BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN: Story in a Salman Film! What else could you wish for?? [3/5]

A star, in every possible sense, is born; in a superstar’s film. She plays a cute but mute young girl accidently separated from her family. Her presence on screen alone gives a lot of hope to the film. She hardly makes a sound in this quite ‘loud’ film but still, you will never skip any of the emotions she throws at you through her rewarding smile, wide-eyed heartrending look and an inspiring performance. 7-year old Harshaali Malhotra is a lot more than just a name in the credit rolls. In fact, she is a blessing to Kabir Khan’s BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN- a film that’s targeted to encash one superstar’s glory, fame and fan-base, and surprisingly has a story too. Go ahead, pinch yourself to believe it.

A young mute girl from Pakistan [Harshaali] is left alone across the border in Indian Territory. Good that she meets a Hanuman-loyal Bajrangi [Salman Khan] who, after several failed legal attempts, decides to take her back to Pakistan at his own. Rest is how the good-hearted people from the neighborhood confirm the existence of humanity and compassion within them. Well, Kabir Khan succeeds in offering us a story that has its heart at the right place. But the fact that a Salman Khan film has a story or vice versa a moving story has Salman Khan in it; is enough to make you ready to expect the unexpected. The first part carries the boring & hurriedly-done love-track of Bajrangi with an ever-ready to ‘hit the dance floor’ Rasika [Kareena Kapoor Khan]. The subplot could hint you to the glimpses of the superstar’s previous hits like BODYGUARD & KICK (He’s given 6 months of ultimatum to build a house of his own to marry her).

The second half marks the entry of Nawazuddin Siddiqui- another talent that never disappoints especially when one is desperately looking for something with gravity. Nawaaz plays a small-time Pakistani reporter on the likes of YouTube sensation Chand Nawab. He is even made to recreate that hilarious ‘reporting live at the railway foot-over bridge’ scene too. Search for it on YouTube, if you haven’t yet. Leave a couple of scenes aside, and Nawaaz manages to steal the show from a superstar who’s believed to rule the frame at any given second. His sincerity is so intact that in one scene, his sign-off line to camera goes like, “Cameraman Chaand Nawaab ke saath, Chaand Nawaab” (He’s shooting the video himself)!

In one of the most poignant scenes, Om Puri playing a Pakistani Maulana smells Bajrangi’s inhibitions to do a ‘salaam’ gesture and immediately does ‘Jai Shree Ram’ to make him at ease. BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN gifts us several such scenes where we are told to get over with the zero tolerance attitude towards different religions, without being any preachy. Similarly, the Kashmir issue gets a delightful mention as, “thoda humara bhi toh hai” when describing the Pak owned part of the same name. On the principle cast, Kareena repeats herself and in all the bad senses.

Finally, BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN is not your typical ‘bhai’ film. It is impossible to take out Salman from the Salman Khan; and in a way, we all have learnt to live with it but given the ‘story’ approach, absolutely engaging talents like Harshaali and Nawaaz, I think it is not a bad film at all. Did I actually write it?? Can’t believe myself! Watch out yourself and decide. Till then, I will look out for a valid justification for my verdict. [3/5]

MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO: The Great Indian ‘Tamasha’! Silly, Impractical but Satirical! [2.5/5]

A rape victim has been identified. The accused is a young man and a promising prospect for his family. The victim belongs to the most influential and dominating man in the community. The police are forced to register an FIR and act responsibly in the case. The victim has to go through all the extensive grilling sessions e.g. medical examination and physical appearance in the crowded premise [in exact sense] of the court. Sounds regular and routine newspaper headline? It was before a Television Journalist decides to bring it on big screen in form of a motion picture; only twist in the tale is the rape victim here doesn’t belong to the human race and is a ‘not so helpless’ buffalo. You will learn the ‘not so helpless’ part later while watching it at your own.

MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO is a dramatized version of some true but bizarre events in the outskirts of a Haryanvi speaking region. Outlined as a social satire, film marks the début of Vinod Kapri once a media professional. No wonder, he chooses the weirdest and the strangest news material to bring out the darkest side of today’s illogically insensitive society; but in a quite entertaining way. It’s silly, impractical, rarest of the rare but satirical to the core. Yes, the bland and colorless toilet humor and the coldness towards rape victims do record a serious damage to its promised picture-frame of a meaningful cinema still, it is a good effort.

The powerful ‘Pradhan’ of Tanakpur [Annu Kapoor] has a young wife [Hrishita Bhatt] half his age at home seeking love, care and compassion in a young man from the neighborhood [Rahul Bagga of MASTRAM]. Soon, his findings about the relationship turn into an ugly game of power to eliminate the man in question. The cops [Om Puri] and the law-enforcement professionals also start acting and sounding illogical within the given parameters of their job-profile. At stake is the worth of our incompetent system that hardly shows any signs of empathy and understanding. India is an ideal and a perfect setting for such ‘Tamasha’. This is a world where dresses are held responsible for rapes and not the men behind it.

Vinod Kapri scores marks at various levels. His grit and guts to weave humor possibly in every frame don’t stick to only the sharp and piercing dialogues Haryanvi is famous for or in the crude characters but also with a prominent usage of quirky sign-boards and quotes painted on walls. Film if falters intentionally or involuntarily, in handling of rape-victims. Some of the remarks made on the victim by various sections of the society are as painful as the inhuman two-finger test. The film severely and frequently tints itself as a bizarre entertainer, mostly because of the ridiculousness in the plot. After all, how often we hear, learn or read about such unimaginable cases? So, when the lead female character expresses her inactiveness and helplessness against the influential powers to the buffalo towards the climax; you too feel the intensity and relate to the proposed end.

Of the performances, Kamlesh Gill as a rough and ready vocal-tank Bua is spot-on. Veteran Sanjai Mishra looks over-enthusiastically powering in every scene even though the script has less to offer him. Restricting Ravi Kishan to what script demands from him and not throwing his weight all around is another milestone achieved [Pun intended]. Rest all including big names like Annu Kapoor and Om Puri do it in a measured mode. Hrishita and Rahul hardly impress.

MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO comes from a brutal reality of a world which most would not find relatable and realistic enough, yet it manages to hit the bull’s eye with just an affirmation that all of it is based on real events. Watch it, because that’s what we do most of the times whenever something like this happens around us! [2.5/5]
