MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO: The Great Indian ‘Tamasha’! Silly, Impractical but Satirical! [2.5/5]

A rape victim has been identified. The accused is a young man and a promising prospect for his family. The victim belongs to the most influential and dominating man in the community. The police are forced to register an FIR and act responsibly in the case. The victim has to go through all the extensive grilling sessions e.g. medical examination and physical appearance in the crowded premise [in exact sense] of the court. Sounds regular and routine newspaper headline? It was before a Television Journalist decides to bring it on big screen in form of a motion picture; only twist in the tale is the rape victim here doesn’t belong to the human race and is a ‘not so helpless’ buffalo. You will learn the ‘not so helpless’ part later while watching it at your own.

MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO is a dramatized version of some true but bizarre events in the outskirts of a Haryanvi speaking region. Outlined as a social satire, film marks the début of Vinod Kapri once a media professional. No wonder, he chooses the weirdest and the strangest news material to bring out the darkest side of today’s illogically insensitive society; but in a quite entertaining way. It’s silly, impractical, rarest of the rare but satirical to the core. Yes, the bland and colorless toilet humor and the coldness towards rape victims do record a serious damage to its promised picture-frame of a meaningful cinema still, it is a good effort.

The powerful ‘Pradhan’ of Tanakpur [Annu Kapoor] has a young wife [Hrishita Bhatt] half his age at home seeking love, care and compassion in a young man from the neighborhood [Rahul Bagga of MASTRAM]. Soon, his findings about the relationship turn into an ugly game of power to eliminate the man in question. The cops [Om Puri] and the law-enforcement professionals also start acting and sounding illogical within the given parameters of their job-profile. At stake is the worth of our incompetent system that hardly shows any signs of empathy and understanding. India is an ideal and a perfect setting for such ‘Tamasha’. This is a world where dresses are held responsible for rapes and not the men behind it.

Vinod Kapri scores marks at various levels. His grit and guts to weave humor possibly in every frame don’t stick to only the sharp and piercing dialogues Haryanvi is famous for or in the crude characters but also with a prominent usage of quirky sign-boards and quotes painted on walls. Film if falters intentionally or involuntarily, in handling of rape-victims. Some of the remarks made on the victim by various sections of the society are as painful as the inhuman two-finger test. The film severely and frequently tints itself as a bizarre entertainer, mostly because of the ridiculousness in the plot. After all, how often we hear, learn or read about such unimaginable cases? So, when the lead female character expresses her inactiveness and helplessness against the influential powers to the buffalo towards the climax; you too feel the intensity and relate to the proposed end.

Of the performances, Kamlesh Gill as a rough and ready vocal-tank Bua is spot-on. Veteran Sanjai Mishra looks over-enthusiastically powering in every scene even though the script has less to offer him. Restricting Ravi Kishan to what script demands from him and not throwing his weight all around is another milestone achieved [Pun intended]. Rest all including big names like Annu Kapoor and Om Puri do it in a measured mode. Hrishita and Rahul hardly impress.

MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO comes from a brutal reality of a world which most would not find relatable and realistic enough, yet it manages to hit the bull’s eye with just an affirmation that all of it is based on real events. Watch it, because that’s what we do most of the times whenever something like this happens around us! [2.5/5]

NAYA PATA: a new address to new-age Bhojpuri Cinema [3.5/5]

In one of the most unsettling scenes, an old forlorn man in his late years is seen enquiring for the easy-availability of ice slabs in his village as his son might take more than a day to come to perform his last ceremonial services after he’s dead. Now, I haven’t seen a single scene so emotionally charged up with plenty rich sensitivity in recent Bollywood. So, I am sure you’ll rub your eyes in disbelief that this is actually happening in a Bhojpuri film and not some mainstream Hindi cinema. Released by PVR, Pawan K Shrivastva’s NAYA PATA never ceases to surprise you even for once with an honest and wholehearted effort to break the jinx that has already put Bhojpuri Cinema on the spot.

In his very first outing, Pawan decides to take you through the throbbing pain of migration in hunt for better job opportunities for young blood in metros. After spending 25 years in Delhi, Ram Swarath Dubey is returning to his native place Chhapra in Bihar. In midst of switching between two different addresses, survive the soreness of identity getting lost and a certain kind of discomfort that doesn’t allow him to feel his roots. No wonder, he gets restless when someone addresses him ‘Dilli wale baba’ (the grandfather who belongs to Delhi). Things get worst for him as loneliness approaches the poor old man, after his son too leaves the place to get settled in one of the bigger cities.

NAYA PATA scores big time in its sincerity that doesn’t get diluted by any of the gimmicks Box Office demands. Shot authentically and esthetically on real locations with challenging lighting techniques responsible and well-efficient to set the desired mood on screen is one of few highlights. The man behind camera Saket Saurabh deserves an accolade. In others, the film is blessed with excellent music sense. With a recurring rendition of Bade Ghulaam Ali Khan saab’s ‘Yaad piya ki aaye’, use of Kabir’s Nirgun and the extracts from ‘Shakespeare of Bhojpuri’ Bhikhari Thakur’s writings and the essence of true folk, this is an album you would be asking for soon after leaving the theatre.

Though the film could not save itself from falling into ‘the very first effort in filmmaking’ syndrome; resulting in performances that look less confident, clumsy and extremely cautious to camera; it’s Abhishek Sharma as the main protagonist and Chandra Nisha as a supporting character who outshine rest in the cast. They both get it as real as it could be especially Chandra Nisha. She is effortless and totally in control. And finally the director, Pawan K Shrivastava should be given every credit to bring back possibilities in Bhojpuri Cinema. There’s a ray of hope and a streak of light on the other side of tunnel and Pawan cements that belief- that hope we all have been dropping after the saddening emergence of so many Ravi Kishens, Manoj Tiwaris and Nirahuas. This is a dawn of new age cinema in Bhojpuri…and I would die to see NAYA PATA leading the way with immense social responsibility and sincere creative accountability for a huge cultural restoration.

NAYA PATA is a new address to Bhojpuri Cinema. Come, visit without any hesitation, inhibition or apprehension! It is here to bring the change and you should be a part of it! [3.5/5]

BULLETT RAJA: Commercial, predictable & average action thriller! Witty one-liners make it Watchable! [2.5]

Names suggest. Names carry perceptions. So whenever you hear ‘Tigmanshu Dhulia’, you expect razor-sharp story-telling [PAAN SINGH TOMAR], utter participation of passion mixed with art [SAAHEB, BIWI AUR GANGSTER] or if nothing else, earnestness shining in the framework for sure [HAASIL]. Intentionally or involuntarily; sounding as if another south action entertainer dubbed in Hindi, Dhulia’s ‘BULLETT RAJA’ has flares of all these but overshadowed & eclipsed heavily by added star value, superficial style & an undeclared delusion in one’s head to be in the sheep-race of 100 Cr club.

Uttar Pradesh- the terra firma of filthy politics, gory goonism, and caste-driven social establishment is the place where ‘BULLETT RAJA’ fits the most. With serenely ferocious Rudra [Played by confident Jimmy Shergill] joined at the hip, fearlessly rowdy Raja [Saif in a comfortable zone] is nothing but a political commando rising and shining under the most powerful politician played by Raj Babbar. Situation goes upside down when the grimy game of power & control gifts back Raja an unbearable loss of his lifetime to flame the anger of vengeance that would blaze the whole of enterprise behind.

A story weakened by confusing screenplay, shabby-unimpressive-infuriating work in the music department & a bad hand in editing were enough to mess up all the reputation Dhulia has earned until comes to rescue the writing, giving plenty of smart & quirky one-liners that hold your interest throughout. Hear this, when villainous Chunky Pandey narrates a mythological incident about Lord Brahma using some foul words [in smartly muted sound], Raja blasts him with bullets saying, “Dharmik mamlon mein hum ashleelta bardasht nahin karte!” Writing also celebrates the emotions one carries for his caste. Playing a Brahmin by caste, Saif will be seen mouthing arrogance profoundly in most of his lines e.g. “Brahmin bhookha toh sudama, rootha toh raavan” or “Brahmin hoon, janam se samajh ke aaya hoon”. Enjoyable & entertaining!

Performances are strictly average and there is nothing that could compel you for a jaw-drop response. Though Jimmy Shergill impresses in the first half and his equation with Saif creates a pleasant sight for eyes & most of the enjoyable moments. Vidyut Jammwal enters the scene after interval and his sequences don’t look more than his acting or rather action showreel. I would love to see him in a meatier role. Sonakshi disappoints the most. This one is a complete superfluous role for her in all these years. There is a hotel scene where Jimmy decides to lock himself in an adjacent room to give Saif & Sonakshi their own space and she is so unwanted that you don’t really want it to happen. Gladly, Saif doesn’t make you feel so and takes you through this partly intriguing action thriller relentlessly.

‘BULLETT RAJA’ is enjoyable in parts and watchable only for its harsh but satirical take on various political & social scenarios mainly in Uttar Pradesh. Dhulia shows his skill to extract raw humor soaked in an unsympathetic rustic feel with languages spoken physically and verbally both. Be attentive with what one-liner will come next from any of the characters and you might experience some good laugh. Overall, it is a revenge drama that is commercial, predictable and targeted only to create some buzz at the box-office, something that is never expected from Tigmanshu Dhulia![2.5/5]

ISSAQ: Leave this unintentionally funny love-story of epic fail alone! [1.5/5]

When, in the very first half, people of all ages sitting around you in a multiplex auditorium start giggling, chattering, commenting, questioning and mocking on the relativity of the film & the sensibility of the filmmaker, one must learn that there is something that has gone wrong while trying to create something impressive.

Manish Tiwary’s ISSAQ- a modern day adaptation of Shakespearean love-story Romeo & Juliet, is one such shameful effort that scrawls and struggles to be ambitiously epic romantic thriller set in Banaras. But thanks to the brigade of most horrible performers in the cast, tacky screenplay and the immature-uncontrolled-abandoned direction that submerges all the potentials and promises to make it an unintentionally funny outing for cinema-lovers.

First of all, the Banaras shown here is not the likeable-lovable-pleasingly colourful Banaras of ‘Raanjhanaa’ but more of a bloody violent-fiercely infuriated & uncivilized rustic one that breathes into an air filled with the smell of gunpowder & explosives of all kind. Rahul & Bachchi [played by Prateik & Amyra] falls in love despite all the warnings to stay away from each other as they belong to families of blood-thirsty rivals. And, they only look at it as just another reason to keep the war alive to establish one’s supremacy.

Unexpectedly ISSAQ has some of the best talents in its ensemble supporting cast like Prashant Narayanan as menacing naxal leader, Neena Gupta as the old confidante & caretaker, Rajeshwari Sachdev as manipulative young wife to Sudhir Pandey- another respected name and Makrand Deshpande as witty babaji with chillum…but for one or another reasons, they all look wasted and quite out of the place in their acting skills probably because of the bumpy- patchy messy plot-subplot labyrinth. Pratiek needs serious lessons in acting including voice modulations. Amyra impresses especially in a scene where she had to recite excerpts from Jayshankar Prasad’s Kamayani in the classroom. Ravi Kishan knows his limits and decides better not to break them. Vineet Singh sure had a longer canvas to milk his potential but not the better one.

In a scene when Makrand sees his devotees getting bored and feeling drowsy over his divine gyaan, he immediately switches to perform a miraculous gimmick to keep them attentive. Unfortunately, Manish Tiwari didn’t have even such gimmicks to make viewers indulged and devoted to the film.  Language being too colloquial-too slangish, editing being weirdly abrupt at places and the uncleaned visual effects are just a few put-offs to name. Only positives are the cinematography and detailing in the art & setting department. You can look out for the real Banaras but only in corners of the frame and in the backdrop, mostly out of focus!

All in all, this mocking love-story that doesn't even spare itself to laugh at, is nothing but a complete waste of nearly 2 & half hours and your hard earned money! Leave it alone…and better look out for other options of entertainment, this weekend! [1.5/5]

BAJATEY RAHO: A small film that limits itself in being a regular DVD film [2/5]

In literal sense, ‘BAJATEY RAHO’ could be taken as a term used notably in North India for conning people vigorously. But in another, it could also represent our very much Indian spirit to celebrate life uncontrollably. Titled as the same, Shashant Shah’s slice-of-life 'Punjabi at heart' comic caper finds its framework foundation on both the grounds but unfortunately fails to impress with a half-cooked storyline and a strictly ‘wannabe’ emotional laugh-riot, clad in a look & feel borrowed from Dibakar Bannerjee’s one of the bests KHOSLA KA GHOSLA.

Sabharwal, played by Ravi Kishan, is a name of crime syndicate that deals in making illegal money from every potential sector like education industry [I call it that because it sure is manufacturing materialistic supplies that are totally in demand on a conveyor belt manner], production of synthetic food items using harmful chemicals and in the most easy money making venture banking with chit-fund kind of concepts that incidentally end up being a cheat fund.

An unfortunate honest man ends his life after being victimized for the bad man’s sinister acts and now, his family [Headed by the impressively presentable Dolly Ahluwalia as his widow, Tusshar as his son and the powerful combination of Vinay Pathak & Ranvir Shorey as their friends in need] has nothing to lose & left much to do except striking back with a solid plan to rob the robber.

From the plot mentioned above to the earthy-rustic characters that has lingo and jargon of a typical Delhiite, from the ‘been there-seen that’ settings to the ‘I see it coming’ regular casting, there is not a single chance that you won’t recall your ‘KHOSLA KA GHOSLA’ experience that still tends to seize your mind with matter of the fact wit in the situation & extremely amusing characters. Well, that could easily have gone in favor of the film but the problem is that it could never remove the tag of a ‘wannabe’.

Even in a short duration of 107 min, if you can not embrace yourself from putting unnecessary romantic track with songs, you seriously need to think of going back on writing table again & again till you do it right! The only time I felt an uncontrolled pleasant stretch in my facial muscles was when Vinay Pathak dressed & sounded as a ‘Narendra Chanchal’ look-like singer, goes for a devotional parody of ‘tainu main love kardaan’ from the forgettable ‘Desi Boys’…and some of the scenes having Dolly Ahluwalia ruling out everyone else in the frame.

At the end, it is a small film that doesn’t dream big in its approach and limits itself in being a regular DVD film. There are moments to cherish and relish you when in dull mood but not enough to rush to the nearest theater. [2/5]
