DILWALE: Guns and Roses, Jammed and Wilted! [2/5]

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Pretending is ridiculous. I really wonder how could someone disregard this golden rule of comedy and still call himself a master of the same. Rohit Shetty’s DILWALE suffers heavily from this exact syndrome where almost everyone involved with the project pretends to be someone else. Rohit acts [behind the camera, as director] as if he’s none less than Late Mukul Anand. Varun Dhawan makes faces as if he’s his dad’s favorite Govinda. Kajol and Shahrukh pretend comfortably to be in a love-story within a comedy within an action thriller [Now you know why Varun compares it with INCEPTION. Yeah, he did. You heard it right!]. The film itself lives in a make-believe world to be a HUM (1991) in plot-construction and DDLJ (1995) in promotional gimmicks. And pretending is ridiculous, I tell you. So, the only two who don’t fall in the pit are Pankaj Tripathi and Sanjay Mishra; one plays a character [where mosts play their aura] and the other does a spick and span imitation of Jeevan Saab.

DILWALE settles its base in Asian Paints sponsored Buenos Aires, Venice and Charleston parts of Goa. Kids here if not driving modified multihued cars, sure would find themselves in a clash for ‘tera laal mere laal se jyada laal kaise?’. Raj [Shahrukh Khan] with his younger brother Veer [Varun Dhawan] runs a Dilip Chhabria inspired garage-cum-design factory and stays mostly as calm as Aloknath in any Barjatya film. Well, mostly. Soon, you find him throwing professional punches on 10-12 goons in a Shahenshah-like working module at nights to ensure audiences that the guy definitely has a dark past behind. Plot gets thicken when Veer meets Ishita [Kriti Sanon] and Raj discovers that the girl is the younger sister of his ex-flame Meera [Kajol]. The star-crossed lovers have many secrets to unravel including murders, betrayals and mix-ups.

So what if it belongs to an average formula of 90’s; DILWALE had a decent story to start with until Rohit Shetty starts promoting it as a great story. Bringing the best on-screen couple together after so long was alone a big pull for the film but Rohit couldn’t hold himself from polluting the same breezy idea of romance with his colossal caring for flying cars, blasting cars, drifting cars, toppling cars and the very dry and dreary sense of slapstick comedy. Since when and why do the charm of Shahrukh and the flair of Kajol need substantial comic sub-tracks having Boman Irani, Johnny Lever, Varun Sharma and Mukesh Tiwari? The film’s high points are mostly with Kajol where she looked, acted and ruled the screen in same potion of intensity, integrity and beauty she’s been always admired for. DILWALE also fails to recreate the chemistry between Kajol and Shahrukh. Rohit does ensure that they both look their best on-screen but it all comes out as a lifeless still postcard and not as a lively moment to cherish.

On the performances, Shahrukh does exactly what he’s been doing in CHENNAI EXPRESS & HAPPY NEW YEAR. He charms the ladies, woos the fans, promotes brands and guarantees a ‘No risk’ cover for his producers [He himself is the one]. Varun Dhawan becomes pathetic, irritating and unbearable at times. Kriti is good, balanced and doesn’t disappoint. Varun Sharma is wasted, especially in a girlfriend-bashing monologue inspired by Kartik Aryan’s in PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA. Kajol is the only redeemer here but in those tiresome and trivial 2 hr 34 min of total duration, trust me, even her spark begins to fade.

At last, Rohit Shetty’s DILWALE is another product that highlights the demand and supply rule in Bollywood. Why to waste time and money on hunt for a concrete story if you can easily make hefty lot of money by just arranging some hit formula-bricks, without even considering the right order it should be in. The film sees around 100 brand tie-ups on opening graphic-plates; I missed brands for pain-relief tablets there. Take a pill, before you try to chill in the theatre! [2/5]

SINGHAM RETURNS: A pair of earplugs could save a lot for you! Rest is all wasted! [2/5]

The consequences of a film joining the over-hyped ‘100 Cr’ club could be many but one you don’t really want to face in most cases, is its inescapable and obvious sequel. Rohit Shetty’s SINGHAM RETURNS is one of those. As a fellow cop in the team makes it loud and clear soon after hero’s grand entry on screen, “Gaanv se shaher badla hai par apne Bajirao Singham ke kaam karne ka tareeka ab bhi wahi hai”! Translation could read, “Only the locations have been changed and the settings, Singham is all the same”. Spot on! SINGHAM RETURNS is a mindless action entertainer that tickles your heart less and hammers on your head more. I hope it hints you enough to carry earplugs and a couple of pills, in case of severe headache!

The new playground for Bajirao Singham [Ajay Devgn back in his vest & khaki avatar] is the city of Mumbai where corrupt politicians force their own set of rules to rule. An Anna Hazare in disguise idealistic Guruji [Anupam Kher in an extended guest appearance] is unwavering about cleaning the filth called corruption and black money from politics but the evil forces including barely a sketchy politician [Zakir Hussain in his probably most attempted character on screen] and a phony holyman who immediately gets into his cool casuals with a glass of beer in hands when not in some public appearances, have their own vicious plans. Singham returns to fight for freedom, justice and enforcement of law in the system, against these mean minds.

Rohit Shetty’s SINGHAM RETURNS clearly shows his over-confidence in the most usual and sub-standard plot. An honest cop’s frustration and distress while on duty leads him to be transformed into a fearless fighter who can also go beyond law to teach lawbreakers a hard lesson. So far so good! So far some respite! But when you see Ajay devgn mouthing dialogues like, “dhoom machaani hai machao, par bike ki gati [speed] par nahin, desh ki pragati [progress] par”, you sure can guess where it’s going. And SINGHAM RETURNS does that often. Where the first half is quite alike any regular episode of the longest running cop-drama CID on TV [You can also find the loveably single-minded Daya here to act on his favorite, “Daya, Darwaja tod do!”, second half is more of Shetty-special shootouts, blasts and ceaseless gravity-defying goon-bashing sequences.

The other part that doesn’t go well with the film is the love-track! Kareena Kapoor plays Avni who besides dreaming to own a franchise of salon, can be seen frenzied over the idea of her marriage to Singham. It is the least appreciated thing if you have especially come out to see a Rohit Shetty Action entertainer. On the performances, Ajay does what people love to see him doing. A macho man who is invincible, intrepid and heroic in every sense! Kareena irritates, well mostly! Amole Gupte slips into the skin of Chandraswamy like Guru of political influences well and succeeds in providing some not sufficient but good laughs.

At the end, a strict warning for parents! If the child artist’s ‘mala raga gheto hai’ act in Yo Yo Honey Singh’s ‘Aati majhi satakali’ song looks cute to you and your kid, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film is for kids! Stop taking your kids in each and every film you go for! It is like in between those blasting-flying-on fire SUVs in the film, you see a trapped Tata Nano being driven by Ajay Devgn and you go into serious prayers, “No, not this! Don’t! You can’t!” Watch it only if you’re one of those unfortunates who are still at home on this extended weekend! Rest, do not bother! [2/5]

HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA: Silly second half spoils the fun! Strictly Watchable!! [2.5/5]

19 extended years, and it still continues to impress, amaze and inspire filmmakers from time to time. DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAAYENGE has been a rich source of inspiration for many Bollywood romantic family dramas, last being Rohit Shetty’s action entertainer CHENNAI EXPRESS and the latest being Shashank Khaitan’s HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA. The plot is lifted smartly; the characters easily find their references well-established before, even the original gets mentioned every now and then to make it sound like a bold and deliberate statement for the makers but the convenience and the laziness in writing that fails to innovate and bring any breeziness on screen. Still, there is a certain likeability flowing all around. Thank to the vigorously ‘in their characters’ lead pair and all those suggestions of DDLJ in the backdrop!

The blithe prankster son of an UK billionaire Raj Malhotra is reinstated in the shoes of ‘sadda Dilli wala munda’ Rakesh Sharma aka Humpty of Vidya Book Center [Played by Varun Dhawan]. Simran here is Kavya, played by Alia Bhatt- a kind of more expressive and a louder version of Kajol whose reason for the month long break is a designer lehanga for her wedding she wants to purchase from Delhi. They meet, greet, fight, kiss & make-up and conveniently find themselves under the sheet just before the interval. That was probably an intentional indication that you should now start expecting everything but nothing soon after the intermission gets over. The fun part just goes missing and the time-pass approach in writings starts taking over. The counterpart and the other contender for Kavya’s hands is an NRI [Idiot box sensation Sidharth Shukla in his silver screen debut avatar] who is absolutely perfect in all senses. And now, it’s high time for Humpty to prove himself as the better choice for Kavya.

The first part of HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is filled with tremendous promises of having lots of fun & frolic moments in the ride and it sure upholds most of it with the witty gang of friends forever. Gaurav Pandey and Sahil Vaid as Humpty’s friends-cum-partners in crime provide good lot of humor with their presence felt in almost every scene. Even the strict, unforgiving and straight-faced father of the bride [the impressive Ashutosh Rana] is shown here a gentle, sympathetic and caring family man who can be reasonable if pursued in good health. His equation with his family is very different from the Amrish Puri of DDLJ and it is quite a pleasant sight to notice the tenderness lies within him.

Film works mostly because of its lead actors. The on-screen chemistry between Alia & Varun gets thicker with their confidence and ease in the role-playing process. Varun makes a ‘Bollywood Hero’ impact that can force you to join him on the dance floor with foot tapping music, cheer him up for action sequences and smile even on his silliest joke. Alia, in same manner is cutely comical. She makes screen brightly lit canvas you’re never really fade up to look at. Sidharth Shukla is an extended guest appearance but definitely has something in him.

To sum up, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a mark of respect to DDLJ in a little lighter manner. Where the original is still playing at at least one theater since its first release, this one is meant solely for an enjoyable watch. Don’t expect it to go any further. Watch it if you have nothing else to do this weekend. This will be a 2 hour 15 min short & sweet break from regular boring day. Strictly watchable! [2.5/5]

CHENNAI EXPRESS: DDLJ visits south India! But the trip is tacky, long & with no surprises! [2/5]

What could be the most painful experience with Indian railways? Crowded platforms, endless wait for trains delayed by hours […in some extreme cases by days also] or the unhygienic interiors? No, the bigger test of your patience comes in when your journey starts but before reaching its destination, stops like the pulse-rate of a dead man for literally no logical reasons. It’s unbearable. Frequent travelers can vouch for that. Same goes with Rohit Shetty’s CHENNAI EXPRESS. It’s long-predictable-never been there but certainly seen that before action entertainer!

After slaughtering classics like Basu Chatterji’s KHATTA MEETHA in GOLMAAL 3 and Hrishikesh da’s GOLMAAL in BOL BACHCHAN…this time, Rohit shamelessly chooses to get hugely inspired by 18-year old still young & fresh trendsetter DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAAYENGE. The only relief is that he keeps the texture and the surface of a love-story intact with shifting the base from North India to South India. Simple it is but ‘no brains allowed inside’ is the tag that comes with his style of film-making. Let’s accept it!

A story that is more of a hit Bollywood formula, of a runaway bride meeting with the charming guy on their journey of a lifetime is no booster at all. To save her life, girl projects him as her love interest. Father challenges him to prove his compatibility. In all these, eventually girl falls for the guy and a little later even the guy starts realizing his feelings for the girl. Happy ending…but not before the final showdown and a ‘ja ja simran ja’ kind of moment to finish it off.

The humour being heavily reliant on wordplays like ‘tu don ki nahin donkey ki beti hai’ ‘main Bhansali nahin hoon, I mean balshaali nahin hoon’, it’s difficult to have laugh out loud moments but some jokes are sure here to stay like shahrukh’s attending nature’s call or in a scene straight from DDLJ where Shah Rukh lends his hand to help Deepika board the train but couldn't stop himself to help another set of 4 people in similar manner who happened to be Deepika’s kidnappers. Another letdown is the language characters speak. It precisely shares more than 60% of dialogues in Tamil.

Areas where CHENNAI EXPRESS scores better than previous Rohit Shetty massy entertainers are the picture postcard south-Indian scenic locations captured awesomely by Dudley and lovable performance of Shah Rukh Khan […a treat for his hard-core fans] especially in comic scenes. He’s back with his charismatic romantic image. But the show stealer is without a doubt Deepika Padukone who never misses her cues as a Tamilian girl with perfect accented Hindi language and characteristic.

At the end, I am not sure how many records are being targeted to smash at the box-office but this trip is a tacky one. At the most, it is just a good day in a regular local train…not a great memorable long route train-trip with friends and family. [2/5]
