CLASSICS REVISITED: The Bridges Of Madison County

We are what choices we make in life. So when a girl chooses to spend rest of her life with someone […mostly in marriages], in one way, she starts her life but in other, she stops too. Priorities change. Preferences change. Dreams get suppressed. Passion takes shelter in some dark remote corners of the house. And in such times when she probably has nothing left within to describe as her own individuality, a sudden breeze of love and care coming from outskirts evokes emotions that are hard to hold.

Extra-marital affairs are something we shun to discuss while enjoying our meals on dining table but still it exists and may be very much in the house, in the inner-self of our loving partner. Now, without being judgmental on the subject, I can say Clint Eastwood’s THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY is one of the most poignant love-story between two individuals stuck badly in their ‘far from each others’ respective lives.

A loving wife & mother of 2 teenage kids [Meryl Streep in a mesmeric superlative performance] accidentally gets to meet an National Geographic travelling photographer in his sober age [Eastwood himself] and soon, in a short-span of 4 days, they both discover strong emotions towards each other that may change the way their life should have been if they haven’t met at the first place! Years later, once she is dead, her kids are made known to this ‘embarrassing’ story that explains about the decision her mother made with her life and why.

As a matured love-saga of different kind, if the film really belongs to someone, it has to be the immensely expressive and natural Meryl Streep. With those parched eyes filled with emptiness, she never misses a shot to make you feel for her. Watch her while answering a simple question as if she really likes the life she’s in. Or in a scene where she lets Eastwood in her house but still not very sure and convinced about her submission to the thought. Clint just creates some magical flare of romance on screen as a competent actor, brilliant writer and equally amazing director. The climax scene where both the lovers are left on a crossroad to make a last choice to be united or take a u-turn to their diverse lives, is for me, the most touching rain sequence on screen ever.

Mahesh Manjarekar’s ASTITVA has impersonated same emotions in a quite Bollywood manner but DO NOT MISS Clint Eastwood’s THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY as it is pure in emotions, clean in thoughts and lyrical in passion. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!

FITOOR: Oh, you (Hopeless) beauty! [2.5/5]

Apart from the jingoistic emotions and vigorous political projection attached to it, India has advanced another reason to not lose its possession over Kashmir. Bollywood loves to shake down this heavenly geographical part & pride of India to its maximum, sometimes by planting a great Shakespearean saga of love, power and betrayal under the grime of its atrocious past [Read: Vishal Bhardwaj’s HAIDER] or sometimes just by using its picturesque postcard locations as a canvas to paint someone’s cinematic dream. Abhishek Kapoor’s FITOOR fits the bill for the latter. Along with his man behind the lenses Anay Goswami, Abhishek stuns you with magnetic visuals capturing icy lakes, snow-clad wooden foot-over bridges, crimson-red mansions and some equally wooden-evenly frosty faces in and around too, in identical respect.

Official adaptation of Charles Dickens’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS, FITOOR is a tale of two star-crossed childhood lovers. They look nothing more than puppets in evil hands of fate dancing on someone else’s tune. Impoverished Noor [Aditya Roy Kapoor] finds a manipulative curator in Begum Hazrat [Tabu] and a susceptibly shifting lover in her daughter Firdaus [Katrina Kaif]. Their ways go apart to meet again but destined to demand more from their lives. The obsession fueled by the love and longing is ready to self-destruct all the dreams and hopes one is always lived for.

FITOOR is very much like the actors playing parts in it. It looks as ravishing, radiant and exquisite as Katrina Kaif on any given day. You can look breathlessly at both until they try to communicate with you. Ms Kaif’s weird diction and pronunciation force you to look out for a ‘never there’ remote control that could either fast-forward the scene or just mute her to make you switch to the ‘beauty-admiration’ mode again. Film also starts behaving like Ms Kaif, at times. It speaks, and a lot but expressions do get lost while being translated on screen. Guess what? Ms Kaif goes to London in this film too. Why? To get her admired accent. How many more times Bollywood will bless her with that added explanatory mention for her accent??

It is also on the likes of Aditya Roy Kapoor. He makes his presence felt on screen but does it at such a lifeless pace and with such a static force that you can never call it ‘a moving experience’. A self-destructive youth caught in the ill-fated love; haven’t we seen him before in such pitiable state? But the one where the film never ceases to hold the power to impress and ignite emotions on many levels is the performance of Tabu. This role earlier had the never-aging, ever-young Rekha in it but Tabu owns it now. From the sharp and shrewd lonesome soul to the hysterically remorseful aging beauty, she looked never so exposed. In other, the casting does have some surprising names from Lara Dutta and Aditi Rao Hyderi to ghazal singer Talat Aziz, mostly in favor of the film.

FITOOR doesn’t often satisfy you as a great drama or a gorgeous love-story but with the controlled direction, some amazing musical renditions by Amit Trivedi and a totally outstanding cinematography, it remains one of those unfortunate cinematic efforts that doesn’t get a full support from its lead pair and dies in a tough fight to survive its killing pace.

DRISHYAM: The hunt for a good thriller ends here! A remake? So what?? [3.5/5]

A remake should be judged by the merits its predecessor had seized in and the flaws of its own while recreating something that has already been positioned as a yardstick; not once, not twice but successively four times in a row. For that matter, DRISHYAM directed by Nishikant Kamat manages to maintain the legacy of providing one of the most satisfying thrillers in recent Bollywood. The road ahead is full of unanticipated twists and turns but you won’t feel shaky as the grip is mostly airtight and the ride is pretty much smooth in terms of staying honest to the subject. DRISHYAM, despite a few slack strokes of imperfections in various fields remains a desirable thriller for the most in its 2 hour 43 minutes long duration; and that’s an achievement in itself.

Vijay Salgaonkar [Ajay Devgn] is an almost illiterate middle-class family man with a questionably ‘decked-up all the time’ wife [Shriya Sharan, a complete misfit] and two lovely daughters by his side. Running a local cable network for his living, Salgaonkar is a street-smart fellow who loves to learn from the movies he watches at his office in leisure. One dark night, his family accidentally falls for a crime that could lead them all to the pit of death but a good family man would never let that happen. He has to stand like an immovable wall between his family and the law-enforcement powers stage-managed by a strict officer and a desperate mother [the terrific Tabu]. Rest is the cat-mouse chase between the two, packed with some real nail-biting moments of anxiety, twists of terrific nature and an extended climax that is more rewarding than the whole film.

DRISHYAM’s biggest force is in Jeethu Joseph’s taut writing. A story that has all the emotional strings attached to the thrills of the undying efforts of covering up the patches of a perfect crime! A screenplay that doesn’t leave much to complain about and a couple of seasoned performances to top it all! The first part takes its own time to set things up in their designed places. This is the part where you also feel crabby and argumentative about the casting of its lead. The innocence and honesty Mohanlal carried of a middle-aged middle-class family-guy in its first and original Malayalam version are often missed here by large margin. No doubt, Ajay brings a certain kind of intensity in his performance but the vulnerability of an illiterate small-time cable-operator is something that he lacks big time. The camerawork by the latest talk-of the-town Avinash Arun is soothing, pleasing and sometimes, old-school too when needed. (Is ‘the boys diving in the water’ his trademark shot? His last 3 films KILLA, MASAAN & now DRISHYAM give it a strong word).

And then, Tabu enters into the frame and the screen suddenly starts breathing its life. She, as the strong-headed, rough and dictatorial police official and as the exposed mother fighting with the loss of his son, beautifully gets into the skin of the character. She undoubtedly is the most charming thing about the film. In rest, Shriya disappoints manly with her irrationally ‘out of the place’ look. Rajat Kapoor shines in the crowd. Kamat as the director hardly throws anything new which wasn’t in the previous versions. But then, we can term this as the ‘blessing in disguise’ in favor of the film’s honesty intact.

Finally, the dearth of a good thriller in Bollywood has been filled with DRISHYAM. So what if the plot/story/screenplay has been adopted four more times before? Engaging, gripping, entertaining and emotionally charged up! Watch it, especially if you haven’t seen any of the previous versions! [My personal favorite is Mohanlal starrer in Malayalam] [3.5/5]

HAIDER: A Bollywood rare that tries to speak…emotionally & politically! [4/5]

1995, Kashmir. When single screen cinemas like Faraz & Sheila in Srinagar were turned into a full-fledged army camps & detention centers, we at the other side were probably unscathed enjoying those terribly silly love-stories on VHS in our drawing rooms and least bothered about that ‘integral part’ of our country. Calling it ‘integral’ itself is an irony. We normally don’t do that to other states. Are we? Vishal Bhardwaj’s HAIDER is a strong political statement retold and represented covered in the long dark shrouds of Shakespearian emotional saga. It’s depressingly sad, gloomy, violent, nerve-racking and makes you bleed emotionally.

Haider [Played by Shahid Kapoor] returns to his soil after his father goes missing in the bleak times of militancy contaminating the Jhelum waters. The disappearance soon gets linked with the unseen before closeness between his mother [Immeasurably talented Tabu] and his power-hungry uncle [Kay Kay Menon in a well-suited comfortable role]. The hunt for the missing and the haunting ache of losing all his emotional supports lands him into the fiery world of hatred, vengeance and revolt at personal front.

Adopted from ‘Hamlet’ of William Shakespeare, HAIDER suffers from the 'Chutzpah' of Vishal Bhardwaj as a deep and sound filmmaker who ruthlessly puts you through the gloomiest atmospheric tale of Kashmir in the times of brutal political turmoil. This is the time of ambiguity when even the closest to your heart can ask you, “Whose side are you on?”. This is the time when ‘Freedom’ merely has just one connotation to it. The burnt doors, broken windows, unclaimed houses and people holding their identity cards waiting in line for getting searched; Bhardwaj sensitively paints the pain and melancholia in the air. There is a scene actually where a man in a mental shock refuses to enter his own house before being searched by anyone. Created to give you a moment to laugh but really?

In its one of the most comical sequences, Vishal Bhardwaj gives us two of Salman Khan fans who also share the name with Salman and run a VHS parlor. There are also moments and elements snitched from the original work like the slightest intimation of layered mother-son relationship. It does make you uncomfortable at first but the makers deserve a pat on back for such bold baby-step. In other, watch out for the old gravediggers stealing the moment at the climax.

And now the performances! Not many might be familiar with Narendra Jha by name but this man exceeds all expectations as a fine performer in the role of Haider’s father. You will find Kashmir in him in all senses. Tabu as an unsettling soul seeking serenity is a mesmerizing presence on screen. She makes us miss her more in films. Kay Kay Menon is comfortably in his zone. Somehow, this is a role we have seen him wearing like a skin. Shraddha Kapoor doesn’t leave any scope to complain. Irrfan Khan in a special appearance brings a good amount of joy and a flare of surprise.

And then there is Shahid Kapoor! Where in the first part he hardly shows anything unforeseen and mostly repeats himself, in the second half he completely blows you off with a brilliantly acted monologue piece and constantly reinventing his acting skills!

Despite all this, there is of course a muddled theatrical concluding part, bearably lengthy duration of nearly 3 hours and harshly done back and forth narrative to offer a bumpy ride and a sense of dissatisfaction but the melancholic shades in the characters and in the character of Kashmir both painted beautifully by some of the most sincere and serious performances make HAIDER an experience worth putting your time and money in. A bollywood film trying to speak is rare and should get a warm welcome! (4/5)

JAI HO: Prabhu Dheva-meets-Sooraj Barjatya! Being SUPER human-sans-common sense!! [2/5]

Do not dare to complain. You had seen it coming. Didn’t the character of Salman Khan warn you in the promos itself that “Aam Aadmi ek sota hua Sher hai, ungli mat kar…jag gaya toh cheer-phaad dega”? Only problem is that the film in question JAI HO decides to take the same salient statement in a very literal sense and not in what it actually intended to be.

So, this ‘Aam Aadmi’ stands nowhere near the classification of a common man, projected & presented well in recent Delhi state elections. But this common man played by the mass hysteria Salman Khan, largely called as ‘Bhai’ does have an overcrowded family with mother & sister ready to participate wholeheartedly in the proceedings as soft targets of evil forces…and whenever that happens, ‘Bhai’ takes a drastic transformation from ‘Being human’ to ‘Being SUPER human’ with the immense power of an incredible hulk like creature who roars loud to deafen your ears, nails his teeth deep in the veins of his enemies and even goes shirtless to make his fans go wild and frenzy over his gigantic stature.

An official remake of Chiranjeevi Starrer Telugu blockbuster ‘STALIN’, again a inspired version of Hollywood drama PAY IT FORWARD, Sohail Khan’s JAI HO [earlier titled as MENTAL] is a film good at heart because of the social message it carries to help out at least three people instead just saying a ‘thank you’ in return of anyone’s help but turns sore, cliché & tiresome with the route it takes to communicate the same. When it is good, it is as sugary as Sooraj Barjatya’s heavily traditional family entertainers. When it is bad, it is as unendurable as Prabhu Dheva’s mindless action-thrillers. Avid movie-watchers can vouch for the both being a non-entertainer.

And then the regular dosage of absolutely inane & offensive jokes! Calling names like ‘Chhota Chooha’ when our leading lady sees a bathing kid without clothes and to make it equal, the kid calling her ‘Pinky’ as, in one of her odd days, she somehow authenticates wearing pink colour undergarments, if this is the height of efforts to make us laugh, I refuse and retaliate to be entertained. Trust me; soon you’ll hear these terms in your zone and Mr. Khan will not be there to protect you with his own fans.

JAI HO is one such film where actors on screen for lesser time look less exasperating than others, to earn comparatively less disapproval and more regards for their ‘short & sweet’ performances. You see so much of known faces in every character on screen that if I put their full names in written here, a 1-page review would need at least 20-odd pages of a coffee-table book to fit in and that in case when their performances don’t bring much to say.

Tabu makes a comeback sort and is good to see but definitely deserves better writing support to match her skills. Nadira Babbar is known for her excellence in theatre but as the mother, she only earns yawns here. Pathetic is the word. Daisy Shah doesn’t get much to appreciate than her dancing skills in the introduction scene. One powerhouse of talent is the Child Artist Naman Jain. See his confidence in comic timings to believe.

And now the man himself! Well, Salman is Salman. No one plays him better than he himself. He does things he believes in. His self-indulgence shows on screen and that is what his fans love to watch. Who am I to come between the God and his die-hard followers? All I can say to rest my case is that JAI HO is a confused platter of spicy southern curries with extra-mild Jain recipes. Better avoid ordering! [2/5]
