(2017's 10 Best Hindi Movies)

Trapped

Tu Hai Mera Sunday

Poorna

Mukti Bhawan

kadvi Hawa

Anaarkali of Aarah

Newton

Gurgaon

A Death in The Gunj

Lipstick under my Burkha

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO: Once upon a time….zzzZZZ! [1.5/5]

Enough said about films that still fall [in literal sense] for 80’s/90’s standard set of emotions to put the cash-registers ringing at the box-office! No, they aren’t nostalgic anymore. Do not hide your sorry state of creative drought behind the curtains of so-called ‘classic age-old charm’! Kings do exist in today’s world; I am aware of some leading that extravagant life in those grand forts of the ‘half palace-half heritage hotel’ nature but trust me, there is no ‘Praja’ in any part of the country that dresses homogeneously in pink sarees and in white kurta-dhoti. But for that tiny little piece of insight, Sooraj R. Barjatya needs to get up from his dining table which serves a daily dose of ‘Sanskar’ more than the reality. Rajshri Productions Pvt Ltd’s PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO is the most confused film I have come across in my life. It neither bores you with its trademark spell of ‘gyaan’ on true Indian values in a ‘softer than melting cheese’ tone nor does tickle you with the all well-bred, polite and ‘cultured’ idea of romance.

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO comes from the house of traditions where a copy of Ramayana should constantly be there on your study table, no matter how old or young you are. Though the plot takes its cues from THE PRISONER OF ZENDA- an 1894 novel by Anthony Hope and Mark Twain’s THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, you can easily find the inspirations and the aspirations straight from the Ramayana. The king of ‘Whatever-pur’ [Sameer Dharmadhikari] had 3 wives like King Dashrath had. Two of the wives being legal and one being often called as ‘mashooka’ of the king, there sure is plenty scope of step-brothers and step-sisters to deal with.

So, the elder son Vijay [Salman Khan] has Ajay [Neil Nitin Mukesh], Chandrika [Swara Bhaskar], Radhika [Aashika Bhatia] as his step-siblings and all the setbacks a family of such nature could have. Just a couple of days before his coronation; the prince meets a schemed fatal accident and now, the trustworthy associates [Anupam Kher and gang] have no other choices left but to replace him with his look-alike Prem [Salman, again] to save the situation. Sonam Kapoor plays Maithili- the princess engaged to the real prince but is now reinventing love in the fake one.

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO is a shoddily directed film where the scale is intentionally big but the soul in the content hardly makes an appearance. Film opens in Ayodhya (a dream location for Rajshri] where Prem is seen switching his accent carelessly and shamelessly from Awadhi to Rajasthani. The battleground for the plot supposedly finds its root in a location 50 Kms away from Ayodhya but can clearly be judged as some rocky royal place in Rajasthan. Aren’t Google maps free to double-check? It’s not that Sooraj doesn’t show any evolution in his mind. There is a constant joke on Anupam Kher being a virgin and I think that’s an achievement for a Rajshri film. So what if in the same film, the cleavage showing girl has to be the wicked one or vice-a-versa and the short-skirts can only be worn behind the closed doors. In a scene; when asked by a reporter if the coronation is not an out-dated procedure in today’s times, the prince intimidates him with, “do you think traditions are funny?” I wish I could answer on his behalf, “No sire, they aren’t funny but looking at what you [Mr. Barjatya] suggest, they are definitely too plain, painful, pale and pointless to be on screen”.

On the performances, I would not dare rate Mr Salman Khan. Though he’s completely comfortable and contented in his zone, his fans would certainly miss a lot of his ‘I don’t give a damn’ mannerism and slapstick action. Sonam Kapoor tries hard, as usual. Arman Kohli as one of the conspirators looks all bulky, grisly and ‘suit’able to the part but acts no better than Neil Nitin Mukesh. Deepak Dobriyal impresses in a scene or two. Swara is so typecast you would hardly notice if she’s from the sets of RAANJHNAA. And what was Sanjai Mishra doing here?

At the end, I don’t see why and how this PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO will entertain families in today’s times especially when there is no ‘Sanskar’ to look up to, no ‘Prem’ to feel shivers of emotion and no cinema [apart from the grand sets and the heavily aspirational designer clothing] to at least calm your senses. There is a scene having a camel gulping down Salman’s diary and suddenly Salman starts calling it ‘Kamil’ for no rhyme and reason. Well, Kamil is none other than the lyricist of the film Irshad Kamil and the joke is not at him but at the makers as how ‘Sanskari’ you are towards your people of strength! Anything 3-hr long can be a drag but this one sets the milestone. ‘Raja-rani ki kahani’ still works to put you to sleep! [1.5/5]

TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS: Just for Laughs…and the ‘QUEEN’! [3.5/5]

A hushed & muted father in 40 years of marriage [K K Raina] is comforting his son [Madhavan] who’s on the edge of making the hardest decision to get out of his dysfunctional marriage; and you can clearly eavesdrop on the mother complaining hysterically about this late night discussion. Towards the end of the conversation, the agitated father gets up, picks up a floor-wiper and breaks the only lit tube light in the house. The marriages anywhere on earth can bring the same effect on any one who claims to be sane. But then, there is always a way to escape the complications. Paying no attention and enjoying your regular spell of drinking could be one, as suggested by the father in the film but divorce is just not so done. How can we not have Tanu and Manu in same frame if the film has already pictured them as a couple? We dare not.

Despite managing a wonderful plot for a sequel, TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS prefers to join the successful league of highly entertaining bollywood films that might go for a clumsy climax and a fake happy-ending just for the sake of audience’s approval. The best part is you have a pool of talents and the powerhouse herself at your side, Kangana Ranaut if you want to play straight; so definitely no one is gonna raise his eyebrows over this preferred choice of not going bold but staying regular.

Four years is a term looking too much to be in marriage for the temperamental Tanu [Kangana] and maddened Manu [Madhavan]. Their latest verbal spat has landed Manu in mental asylum and Tanu in killing loneliness. She returns to her zone, of ex-boyfriends, fewer limitations and an all flying high life with no strings attached. Manu meets a mirror image of Tanu and falls in love instantly. This new entrance [the overpowering double role of Kangana] is a Haryanvi athlete- a lot rough in her vocals but much more susceptible and sensitive within. Meanwhile, returns Pappi [Deepak Dobriyal]- the uproarious friend who never runs out of droll one-liners. Then, there is Raja Awasthy [Jimmy Shergil] adding the drama led by power, passion and attitude. Zeeshan Ayyub plays your regular mean and tricky one-sided lover who considers himself belonging to a certain ‘kandha’ type men known for offering their shoulders to broken girls to cry at.

TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS takes off from the base of its prequel and lands up in the territory of ‘RAANJHNAA’. Aanand L Rai being the powering team-lead and Himanshu Sharma the delectable writing force, it doesn’t fail as an experiment. Film guarantees uncontainable laughs especially in the first half before the ineptness in the screenplay starts bothering you soon. Be it the wedding-scene where Pappi kidnaps his ‘whats app’ female friend to marry just because she would reply on his even lamest jokes with ‘LOL’ text messages or where Swara Bhaskar sounds like she had done anything unethical in going medical way to conceive a child without telling her husband; the second half eventually becomes the rush-rush, hush-hush mission to meet the forged happy ending. When would we stop pretending that marriages are not done until the very last ‘phera’? When would we stop taking our climaxes to the ‘mundup’ at the very final moments?

Anyways, keeping my issues aside; it’s a film that establishes Kangana’s success in QUEEN wasn’t a fluke. She surfaces as a towering performer in both her roles. No matter what get up, what accent she’s into; Kangana is there to spellbind you. Her flawless performance gives you goose bump moments we rarely experience or expect from Bollywood films. Madhavan is equally competent. His charms never fade. His kind, compassionate and fragile Manu makes his own place in your hearts. The casting is superbly accomplished.

Overall, TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS is a film made for laughs! Frequent laughs! Fabulous laughs!! If only Aanand L Rai had not been so conservative about divorces, film would have been blessed with a much appreciative climax. Watch out for the ‘Queen’ whose vivacious presence alone makes every penny of yours a ‘worth it’ investment to gain super-sized entertainment! [3.5/5]

Trailer- review of ‪ X- PAST IS PRESENT‬ : All for one and One for All!

Past is present. You are what you have been at all the assorted stages in your life. Each one has contributed and transited some of it to shape up your present. Not only the eventful accomplishments but abortive relationships too! And if it is not just one or two but 10 to be exact, consider yourself a layered project fascinating enough for everyone to experience.

‘X- Past is present’ brings 11 gifted film-enthusiasts at same platform to tell one heaven of a story meant to have their distinguished style representing various illustrious genres in film-making in the most promising manner. A noted filmmaker [Rajat Kapoor of ANKHON DEKHI] meets a mystifying beauty that incidentally makes him revisit the days of vividly practiced past with his 10 ex-girlfriends.

The official trailer sees the girl in present [Aditi Chengappa] trying to shake up and extort reminiscent images from filmmaker’s past and we get introduced to his girlfriends in close-cuts. From the suave & sophisticated Gabriella Schmidt to enigmatic Parno Mitra, Bidita Bag, Neha Mahajan, Richa Shukla, Rii Sen, Piaa Bajpai, unrestrained Radhika Apte, overpowering Huma Qureshi, sensuous Swara Bhaskar and the adolescent Pooja Ruparel of DDLJ (…that makes it 11??).

The dramatic streaks in characters and in the visual treatment on their parts sure forecast an experimental stroke for niche and an engaging flick for the rest. Also coming from the fact that each chapter goes to a different director with a fresh new yet synced approach, ‘X- Past is present’ is inventive enough for an artistic effort to hold your attention but if it is not enough for you, here is the most interesting lot of filmmakers joining in to guarantee. The credit reads Q- the man behind the radical, experimental and unapologetically erotic GANDU, notable film-reviewer and journalist Pratim D. Gupta, Sonam Kapoor starrer AISHA fame Rajshree Ojha, Sudhish Kamat of the impressive GOOD NIGHT GOOD MORNING, Sandeep Mohan, Nalan Kumarsamy, Hemant Gaba, Anu Menon, Abhinav Tiwari, Suparn Verma and the dynamic film-critic Raja Sen .

All said and done, there is a lot to unravel and unlearn about in the plot and in the final product but at the moment of time, ‘X- Past is present’ is a potential innovator to make Indian Cinema proud on any global platform. I hope and wish it breaks all the barriers and refuses to be in the guarded shields of established norms in film-making.
