BABY: Not so-smart but well-made! [3/5]

An anti-nationalist tries to intimidate our hero by making a declaration like, “Beware! We write MUSLIM as our religion in the column marked for so in all government forms”; and our hero-an undercover agent gives him an equal back, “We are more submissive towards our nation as we write INDIAN in the said column”. I am not sure how many times the officer in question would have faced rejection of his forms at the respective offices and counters but for the screen, it does create an impact; an impact more Bollywood-ish but substantial for a nationalistic film made for entertainment.

Writer-director Neeraj Pandey has proved himself earlier with his similar approach in A WEDNESDAY & in SPECIAL CHABBIS (26). His latest BABY is a gripping but easy espionage-thriller filled with fast-paced action, impossible-looking anti-terrorist missions, men under cover, race against time situations, mellowness in melodrama and more notably Akshay Kumar playing his age. So, you might miss him hitting the dance floor on some vodka & short-skirt girl obsessed Yo Yo Honey Singh number but I enjoyed it more.

Not many years passed when Bollywood has restrictions not to take ‘names’ while referring our neighboring country but now, we are liberated enough to come up with lines like, “+92 [country code of Pakistan] lagao, mujhe aazad karao”, a terrorist flounders in prison. Fondly christened for its short term, BABY is a 5-year trial program where 12 undercover agents are trained & unfastened to fight terrorism freely with a clause that Indian Government would never claim their identity as an Indian in worst case scenario. BABY- the film is the last mission of BABY-the program.

Headed by Feroze Ali [Danny in an identical role of his ATS chief in Mani Shankar’s 16 DECEMBER], Ajay [Played by Akshay Kumar] & his team [schemer Anupam Kher, muscle-man Rana Daggubati and the trained martial art expert in salwar-suit Taapsee Pannu] are chasing down the terrorist movements in various parts of India to terminate their lethal plots. Their prime targets are Bilal Khan [Kay Kay Menon in a shorter role] who wants proper attention & treatment at par Kasab would get, and Maulana- a Pakistan based religious leader-orator & mastermind modeled on Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and believably played by the Pakistani actor Rasheed Naz.

BABY acts immature as a juvenile when it comes to be a smart thriller. It never actually shocks you with a more feasible approach than being a tough nut-to-crack thriller but the pace, no non-sense songs, believable acting performances, brilliantly shot sequences and an underlay deadpan humor throughout. Though it is one such film that believes a mustache can make a hero look more real, BABY tries a lot to break the norms Bollywood is known to fall for. So no more ‘on-time’ wire-cuts while defusing a bomb! No more melodramatic cries over personal/professional losses! And more importantly, no breathing space for item numbers [one comes at the end-credits, you can ignore that easily].

As the final verdict, Neeraj Pandey’s BABY has his trademark patriotic touch with absolute mass appeal but lacks the punch in emotions he showed in ‘A WEDNESDAY’ and what’s also a miss is the smartness and the unquestionable precision in the screenplay as his SPECIAL CHABBIS (26) excelled in. Still, it’s a well-made thriller that doesn’t lose its steam despite being 2 hour 40 min long…and that says a lot! [3/5]

BANG BANG: Mission Entertainment, Failed! [2/5]

Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz starrer KNIGHT AND DAY wasn’t an extraordinary action movie outing at the first place; so when Bollywood has come up with an idea to officially remake it, expecting anything better to come out of it is surely our fault and not of the makers. Since Bollywood has now become quite an expert with remaking their own classics into the most forgettable ones, you can only imagine what would have they done with an average Hollywood action thriller. Siddharth Anand’s BANG BANG is a regular bollywood junk suitable only to those who crave for quick, forgettable and mindless adrenaline rush for their dose of entertainment.

Rajveer [Played by the delectably charming Hrithik] is a daredevil wanted for stealing the historical Kohinoor Diamond from a museum in London and can frequently be seen in Shimla roaming with the ‘diamond’ in his pocket. In a ‘written as in the script’ incident, he meets a middle-class desperate girl [Katrina, of course] with starry dreams to tour the world someday. And now the both should be together in the hide & seek game with cops [Pavan Malhotra, wasted] & the international crime syndicates [Danny Denzongpa & Javed Jaffrey] to save each other’s lives. But there is a twist, Rajveer is hardly who he pretends to be.

Problems with BANG BANG never really end. Where the original Hollywood flick had its own share of logic behind every action and plot developments, this Bollywood version hardly tries to be imaginative or logical. One action sequence leads to an abrupt song & dance number followed by another action sequence and another song & dance number! This goes on & on until the intermission. You take the loo-break, join the movie and it starts all over again. The most irritating transitions between scenes are Katrina waking up in the bed, in a new location, in a new country. 2 hours 35 minutes and you hardly see a smart espionage moment. Yes, there are brilliantly performed action thrills but no moment of shock even in the climax. If you could not see it coming, that’s never because of their excellence but your inattentiveness.

Siddharth actually doesn’t leave any stone unturned to make it a proper Bollywood film. A bollywood film that never doubts on the moves of its hero, in fact it tries to cover him up. BANG BANG does exactly the same…with all of the film. So, more than 25 films in her name and we still have to give reasons [read: excuses] for Katrina’s accented vocal presentation. So she might possess ‘Harleen’ as her name, she is a Canada born child whose parents are dead in a terrible road accident [as convenient as swimming is to a fish] and now she is living with her grandmother in Shimla from last 10 years or more. Established in first half an hour, now do not you dare to ask why she can’t talk in proper accent?

My two favorite moments are probably the only moment I had an effortless smile on my face. When press asks the grandmother about Harleen’s whereabouts, she tells them that she had to consult her lawyer first and one media-person reacts, “Dadi, American serials dekhna band karo!” In other, Hrithik makes faces and pun about Katrina’s boring single life and her search for boyfriend on dating sites. Genuinely funny and natural!

On the performances, Hrithik manages to keep everyone hooked with his ease at action, silkiness in dance and the big screen charisma of the heroic chiseled-oiled body muscles. Deepti Naval & Kanwaljeet mark their presence felt. Rests in the supporting cast are either wasted completely or extremely regular. Watch out if breathtaking locales, hard to imitate dance moves, some good action sequences and your favorite stars are enough to make you spend [read: waste] your precious time and hard-earned money. It deserves nothing less than a place in the list of AAP MUJHE ACHCHE LAGNE LAGE and KITES! [2/5].

JAI HO: Prabhu Dheva-meets-Sooraj Barjatya! Being SUPER human-sans-common sense!! [2/5]

Do not dare to complain. You had seen it coming. Didn’t the character of Salman Khan warn you in the promos itself that “Aam Aadmi ek sota hua Sher hai, ungli mat kar…jag gaya toh cheer-phaad dega”? Only problem is that the film in question JAI HO decides to take the same salient statement in a very literal sense and not in what it actually intended to be.

So, this ‘Aam Aadmi’ stands nowhere near the classification of a common man, projected & presented well in recent Delhi state elections. But this common man played by the mass hysteria Salman Khan, largely called as ‘Bhai’ does have an overcrowded family with mother & sister ready to participate wholeheartedly in the proceedings as soft targets of evil forces…and whenever that happens, ‘Bhai’ takes a drastic transformation from ‘Being human’ to ‘Being SUPER human’ with the immense power of an incredible hulk like creature who roars loud to deafen your ears, nails his teeth deep in the veins of his enemies and even goes shirtless to make his fans go wild and frenzy over his gigantic stature.

An official remake of Chiranjeevi Starrer Telugu blockbuster ‘STALIN’, again a inspired version of Hollywood drama PAY IT FORWARD, Sohail Khan’s JAI HO [earlier titled as MENTAL] is a film good at heart because of the social message it carries to help out at least three people instead just saying a ‘thank you’ in return of anyone’s help but turns sore, cliché & tiresome with the route it takes to communicate the same. When it is good, it is as sugary as Sooraj Barjatya’s heavily traditional family entertainers. When it is bad, it is as unendurable as Prabhu Dheva’s mindless action-thrillers. Avid movie-watchers can vouch for the both being a non-entertainer.

And then the regular dosage of absolutely inane & offensive jokes! Calling names like ‘Chhota Chooha’ when our leading lady sees a bathing kid without clothes and to make it equal, the kid calling her ‘Pinky’ as, in one of her odd days, she somehow authenticates wearing pink colour undergarments, if this is the height of efforts to make us laugh, I refuse and retaliate to be entertained. Trust me; soon you’ll hear these terms in your zone and Mr. Khan will not be there to protect you with his own fans.

JAI HO is one such film where actors on screen for lesser time look less exasperating than others, to earn comparatively less disapproval and more regards for their ‘short & sweet’ performances. You see so much of known faces in every character on screen that if I put their full names in written here, a 1-page review would need at least 20-odd pages of a coffee-table book to fit in and that in case when their performances don’t bring much to say.

Tabu makes a comeback sort and is good to see but definitely deserves better writing support to match her skills. Nadira Babbar is known for her excellence in theatre but as the mother, she only earns yawns here. Pathetic is the word. Daisy Shah doesn’t get much to appreciate than her dancing skills in the introduction scene. One powerhouse of talent is the Child Artist Naman Jain. See his confidence in comic timings to believe.

And now the man himself! Well, Salman is Salman. No one plays him better than he himself. He does things he believes in. His self-indulgence shows on screen and that is what his fans love to watch. Who am I to come between the God and his die-hard followers? All I can say to rest my case is that JAI HO is a confused platter of spicy southern curries with extra-mild Jain recipes. Better avoid ordering! [2/5]

BOSS: Another milestone in senseless action-comedy aimed to touch 100 Cr mark! [2/5]

First rejoinder:

I don’t recall when was the last time I wanted to cheer for the villain beating the hero to his guts out till I sensed myself ready to whistle for Ronit Roy in his final collision with Akshay Kumar in Anthony D’Souza’s BOSS. Reasons could range from my fondness for the prior [Thanks to Motwane’s UDAAN] to his completely black yet the most consistent performance in the film or it could also be my ‘controlled till now’ patience blasting and demanding nothing but someone from the cast taking a stand and whipping-thrashing & battering the character of Akshay Kumar for all the mindless action he does in the film. For me, the performance of DCP Ayushman Thakur played by Ronit Roy is my takeaway from the film! Rest is forgettable!

What is it?
Exactly. What was it? at the most, plot could be described best as a distant relative of all the recent mindless potboilers including Akshay Kumar’s own Rowdy Rathore, Khiladi 786 and hundreds of late 80’s Dharmendra/Mithun chakraborty popular action entertainers. No wonder, in the similar manner you see the hero being introduced as ‘in & as’ format only after 30 odd minutes in the film followed by opening titles in another 10-12 mins after.

Surya- the black sheep in the family of ‘adarshwadi Masterji’ of Banares [played by Mithun Chakraborty], is now in safe but dirty hands of Crime-syndicate Tauji of Haryana [Danny Dangzopa]. 15 years later, Surya [the one & only Akshay Kumar] emerges into a self-loved transporter who bashes up all the goons to save poor villagers but ironically also wears the hat of a money-driven contract killer. In one alike situation, he’s given instructions to kill none other than his younger brother. Shockingly, father also doesn’t have much option left than dragging his abandoned son into this with his powers to save the kid and thus starts the final journey to a picture-perfect happy ending sans my favorite villainous brother of the bride J

How is it?
Films like BOSS are made to run on the star-power, so it is all the way an Akshay Kumar film. You don’t really have to use your mental muscles to imagine in what manner the action, jokes or for that matter even the songs would shape up. Performances are loud, regular and totally in sync with the likings of its targeted audience. Only exception is Ronit Roy as the cold-blooded, merciless, power-driven lawman of his own set of laws. In one scene, when Akshay the Boss is seen jogging/jumping on the trucks [mind you, it’s not the regular track but a chain of trucks] while his first face-off to Ronit- the DCP, you can easily make a distinction between their intensity in the performance! At 2 hour 30 min long duration, it serves you ‘baasi’ ingredients in the name of entertainment.

Who should go?
Watch it if you are an Akshay Kumar fan. Watch it if you already have learnt the lyrics of the ‘yo yo honey singh’ songs in the film by heart. Watch it if Mithun Chakraborty was your first super-hero in Bollywood. Watch it if your mind-heart-soul still adore late 80’s formula action thrillers.

Who should stay away?
If you think Bollywood is changed! If you think entertainment doesn’t have to be formulaic! If you love Indie Cinema more than regular releases! If you believe cinema is a sensitive art form! If you still are reading my review!

Final outcome:
A Presentation of ‘Cape of Good Films’ [really??] Anthony D’Souza’s BOSS is another milestone in senseless action-comedy aimed to touch 100 Cr mark. I don’t see any hurdle in that because as the character of Akshay kumar would have said in his Haryanvi, if asked “apne ko kya hai, apne ko toh bass paisa bahana hai”! [2/5]
