GUDDU RANGEELA: Average Writing makes it Average! [2/5]

Subhash Kapoor carries certain gravity with his name. You should remember him as the wisely witty and responsibly engaging filmmaker behind PHAS GAYE RE OBAMA- a hilarious take on Global Recession and JOLLY LLB- another satirical drama on Indian Judiciary System. The fact that he’s been chosen to replace Raju Hirani and direct the next in the MUNNABHAI series itself says a lot about the man. Sadly, his latest GUDDU RANGEELA despite having all his trademarks fails miserably to impress, or even entertain at large to match that extended expectations.

Full-time Orchestra singers and small-time criminals Guddu [Amit Sadh] and Rangeela [Arshad Warsi] find themselves trapped in a ‘kidnapping gone wrong’ case but what’s hidden in the box, has also an opportunity they have been looking for almost a decade. Their counterpart Billu Pehalwan [Ronit Roy] is a local MLA and a hardcore supporter-admirer and motivator of Khap Panchayats. Honor-killing is just one of his favorite leisure activities.

GUDDU RANGEELA decides to talk about social filths of many sorts but doesn’t showcase guts to provide sensible solutions or a definite way out in any manner. In fact, it doesn’t think twice before turning a potential social-drama into a personal revenge-saga. Khap Panchayats can be as heartless, harsh and cold-blooded as anyone could think of. We all are sentient to the Manoj-Babli honor killing case; but this is no real world. Looks like Subhash Kapoor believes in having the cake and eating it too. The reel world’s Manoj and Babli conveniently escape the bloody fate to be able to walk the road to the bazaar-demanding happy end. The writing and the jokes are strictly average, though the twist in the first half is well-executed. Film loses its steam completely when starts settling all this with a dramatic climax on the lines of any action movie from 80’s.

Raju Hirani is known to bring interesting still images on screen that has already been successful in filling your heart with joy. Remember, the passing shot of a man clicking a bunch of women all clad in Burkha from head to toe, in 3 IDIOTS? Mr. Kapoor too tries it with the most colorful visual in the film, of Saadhus playing football in the yard of a temple. In others, Achint Kaur plays a new-age Chief Minister enjoying her chewing gum while showing off her strength and force in the character. The coolest, I say! And then there is this intrepid scene where Guddu unapologetically asks Baby [Aditi Rao Hydari], “Degi?” without giving any shady explanation. I like it! I wish GUDDU RANGEELA would have had more and more of such differently able scenes, and not just some lame, age-old and tasteless jokes to cover-up.

Arshad Warsi is repeating himself big time, I’m telling you. His ISHQIYA days are still here. And he is hardly able to level it with whatever he’s getting to play. Amit Sadh tries his hard to give us a believable Haryanvi character but the efforts overshadow the talent. Ronit Roy despite having a one-dimensionally written part manages to pull out very well. He never goes off-track, neither in his attitude nor in the lingual detailing. Of the rests, Rajeev Gupta as the Sub-inspector tickles you the most.

At last, with the kind of metaphors and affection Subhash Kapoor uses in GUDDU RANGEELA, it sure can be seen as his SHOLAY mashed with the sensitivity towards some real bad social impurities. But not in a perfect measure! [2/5]

UGLY: Kashyap Returns to his territory! Dark gets darker! [4/5]

A 10-year old girl is missing. Or kidnapped. Or murdered. And the cops at the nearest police station are busy scratching their nails deep into why actors change their names for screen and if everyone does it, why hasn’t Amitabh Bachchan done the same? This is a piece of reality anyone would relate to. Certainly, this doesn’t work in the favor. For that matter, even the departmental sniffer dog is also an inefficient one. But Anurag Kashyap never misses it, especially when it comes to paint the screen in the most under-lit shades. UGLY is dark, disturbing, real, riveting and one of the best thrillers in the lines of Kashyap’s earlier trysts with the genre; PAANCH & BLACK FRIDAY!

The college love-triangle usually flourishing in the most vivid Karan Johar style romantic dream world returns to the hard & harsh world of reality, handled in Anurag Kashyap fashion. The ‘Rahul’ boy with the most charming looks [Rahul Bhatt] here is now a struggling actor with a bottle of rum in one hand and packs of pre & post workout protein supplements on the upper rack in his room.

The girl in love [Tejaswini Kolhapure] has lost it completely. Her dream world is beaten, bashed and thrashed to the broken world of no hopes left. The silent-shy lover and the toughest cop in the circuit [Ronit Roy] do come to recue the girl but not without leaving his masculine ego to throw away lines like ‘tum bachi khuchi mili thin mujhe’. Circumstances bring both the contenders against when the daughter from the first marriage goes missing. And everyone is under the sharp knives of suspicion; from the real father and his friends to the step one!

Kashyap’s UGLI is a winning combo of brilliantly written characters, worth-watching performances and a perfect expertise on the execution level. The cinematography is extremely grasping, explosive and exact. The background score keeps the tension high on meter and constantly haunts for the rest. And then, the most enjoyable characters with their indefinite shades.

Girish Kulkarni as the ‘technology unconscious’ cop is both maddening and enjoyable. Vineet Kumar Singh is a shocking revelation. Watching him trying voice-modulation in one scene and his all swearing verbal outburst in the finale, is a rewarding experience. Tejaswini deserves a mention for playing hopeless soul torn between her miserable first choice and the unashamedly egoist savior in the second. Rahul Bhatt fearlessly shifts shades from a caring father to self-centered struggling actor. We have seen Ronit Roy as an arrogantly manipulative cop [in Akshay Kumar starrer BOSS] and a dominating male [in Kashyap produced UDAAN] before, but it looks like neither he’s done with it nor us. He’s repetitive but simply outstanding.

With UGLY, Anurag Kashyap returns to his territory where dark is the only illumination to reveal and discover one’s inner-self. The violent, sadistic, opportunist, selfish and vengeful self that come out in light only when it gets dark. And real. And well-suited. When a subordinate updates his chief about the missing girl being a fine-looking and that this could make it narrowing the search to the child-sex rackets, he realizes later that it is the father who he’s talking to. Nothing can be so terrifying for a father and a sensitive viewer too. Definitely, the world outside is dark. Watch it if you want to wake up yourself from laid-back dreams and don’t if you have a fragile heart. UGLY remains awesome, in both settings! [4/5]

2 STATES: beautiful film but no signs of newness in the plot make it strictly watchable! [2.5/5]

In order to impress his hardcore Tamilian future in-laws when Krish [Arjun Kapoor entering into a completely new territory of Bollywood’s safest road to win hearts; the romantic comedies], a Punjabi Chap brings Engagement-rings for everyone in the family, the statement comes out loud and clear, “Marry one-marry all”. Indian weddings can never get more comprised than in this particular scene in debutante Abhishek Verman’s 2 STATES. Impressive, moving and very well done but the biggest question here is if fine film-making could really save a film with absolute no meat in the plot and all ‘done in the past’ predictability that comes handy in any such Bollywood Film. Sadly, the answer falls in negative.

Based on the bestseller of Chetan Bhagat’s kind of autobiographical novel of same name, 2 STATES tries to bring two different cultures, two different families helmed by their own set of lifestyles and ‘hard to break or mold’ establishments in thoughts, under one wedding-Mandup. Krish falls in love with Ananya [Alia Bhatt comfortably stepping in the shoes]. Ananya falls for Krish too but their families don’t as one comes from the loud Punjabi culture and the other backed by Tamilian traditions.

The boy and girl try to woo their parents in any which way they could but rather than getting excited and on your nerves to find out how, you would end up waiting with a big ‘when’ on your face. The plot that shares similarities with most of the Indian love stories produced in the past never actually rises from just looking great, vibrant and immensely fresh in every frame. No one should sink in doubts that this is one of the finest in terms of cinematography and set direction. There is hardly any frame that doesn’t make your heart feel drenched in true Indian colors.

What kills the chance is the obviousness in the way story moves forward. The sweat couple in love put one after another fall like house of the cards but towards end, it doesn’t take more than a couple of minute to set all the puzzle-pieces together. Convenience at its best! Jokes are clearly more on colour, rituals, taste and choices in art and food and anything you could think of easily. Though Verman controls himself from making characters stereotyped [Alia doesn’t carry any south-Indian accent] and that should be praised wholeheartedly!

In a deliciously ensemble cast, Amrita Singh plays a bitchy-overtly possessive Punjabi mother to Krish with fine nuisances. Ronit Roy as his unapologetic yet emotional father excels in most to bring lumps in your throat especially at the end. Shiv Subramanian and Revathy play it smooth, subtle and sweet as Tamilian parents to Ananya. Watch out for Revathy singing the soulful ‘Saathiya, yeh tune kya kiya’ from her 1991 film LOVE! Lovely addition!!

Of the lead, Alia looks garden fresh and emotes too. Her presence sparks the screen making it a picture perfect sight to rest your eyes. Arjun as a geeky, confused, nervous lover boy shows his growing confidence as an actor. In conclusion, 2 STATES is a beautiful film let down by a superficial plot and a stretched at long duration only to ruin all the promises that could have turned the table in a better direction all together. Alas, no signs of newness in the plot make it strictly watchable! [2.5/5]

BOSS: Another milestone in senseless action-comedy aimed to touch 100 Cr mark! [2/5]

First rejoinder:

I don’t recall when was the last time I wanted to cheer for the villain beating the hero to his guts out till I sensed myself ready to whistle for Ronit Roy in his final collision with Akshay Kumar in Anthony D’Souza’s BOSS. Reasons could range from my fondness for the prior [Thanks to Motwane’s UDAAN] to his completely black yet the most consistent performance in the film or it could also be my ‘controlled till now’ patience blasting and demanding nothing but someone from the cast taking a stand and whipping-thrashing & battering the character of Akshay Kumar for all the mindless action he does in the film. For me, the performance of DCP Ayushman Thakur played by Ronit Roy is my takeaway from the film! Rest is forgettable!

What is it?
Exactly. What was it? at the most, plot could be described best as a distant relative of all the recent mindless potboilers including Akshay Kumar’s own Rowdy Rathore, Khiladi 786 and hundreds of late 80’s Dharmendra/Mithun chakraborty popular action entertainers. No wonder, in the similar manner you see the hero being introduced as ‘in & as’ format only after 30 odd minutes in the film followed by opening titles in another 10-12 mins after.

Surya- the black sheep in the family of ‘adarshwadi Masterji’ of Banares [played by Mithun Chakraborty], is now in safe but dirty hands of Crime-syndicate Tauji of Haryana [Danny Dangzopa]. 15 years later, Surya [the one & only Akshay Kumar] emerges into a self-loved transporter who bashes up all the goons to save poor villagers but ironically also wears the hat of a money-driven contract killer. In one alike situation, he’s given instructions to kill none other than his younger brother. Shockingly, father also doesn’t have much option left than dragging his abandoned son into this with his powers to save the kid and thus starts the final journey to a picture-perfect happy ending sans my favorite villainous brother of the bride J

How is it?
Films like BOSS are made to run on the star-power, so it is all the way an Akshay Kumar film. You don’t really have to use your mental muscles to imagine in what manner the action, jokes or for that matter even the songs would shape up. Performances are loud, regular and totally in sync with the likings of its targeted audience. Only exception is Ronit Roy as the cold-blooded, merciless, power-driven lawman of his own set of laws. In one scene, when Akshay the Boss is seen jogging/jumping on the trucks [mind you, it’s not the regular track but a chain of trucks] while his first face-off to Ronit- the DCP, you can easily make a distinction between their intensity in the performance! At 2 hour 30 min long duration, it serves you ‘baasi’ ingredients in the name of entertainment.

Who should go?
Watch it if you are an Akshay Kumar fan. Watch it if you already have learnt the lyrics of the ‘yo yo honey singh’ songs in the film by heart. Watch it if Mithun Chakraborty was your first super-hero in Bollywood. Watch it if your mind-heart-soul still adore late 80’s formula action thrillers.

Who should stay away?
If you think Bollywood is changed! If you think entertainment doesn’t have to be formulaic! If you love Indie Cinema more than regular releases! If you believe cinema is a sensitive art form! If you still are reading my review!

Final outcome:
A Presentation of ‘Cape of Good Films’ [really??] Anthony D’Souza’s BOSS is another milestone in senseless action-comedy aimed to touch 100 Cr mark. I don’t see any hurdle in that because as the character of Akshay kumar would have said in his Haryanvi, if asked “apne ko kya hai, apne ko toh bass paisa bahana hai”! [2/5]
