HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI: A sob-sob dated story! [1.5/5]

Despite being screamed at, threatened and controlled by her egoist, rough and aggressive husband, an Indian wife can’t gather enough guts to throw away her ‘Mangalsutra’. As the matter of fact, she tries to shut her ears melodramatically with both the hands when is suggested for the same from an old lady happened to be her own mother-in-law. And when the unwanted husband makes an unexpected visit in last 5 years, she doesn’t mind giving him a warm welcome with all the comforts he can wish for. And, if overwhelmed by someone’s goodwill for her miserable life, she can easily entitle him ‘God’. And, she cries all the time. Well, this is not an overview on the condition of women in prehistoric India. This is Mohit Suri’s regressively depressing and awfully hopeless film HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI written by one of the most ‘ahead of his times’ filmmakers in India, Mr Mahesh Bhatt.

Vasudha [Vidya Balan] is a single mother working as a florist in an established hotel and waiting for her gone husband Hari [Rajkumar Rao] - a prime suspect in a terrorist-act. Impressed by her dedication at work, her new boss Aarav [Emran Hashmi] offers her a better job opportunity but soon, falls in love with the lady. He loves to help the needy. And he has a very convincing justification too, for his compassion; as if no man on this earth can show empathy towards any woman around without having a proper, emotional and dramatic back-story. Aarav’s mother too has been a single-parent for the most of her life.

Hari returns. Incidentally, he is innocent and is framed. The Indian wife has turned now in a ‘Savitri’ mode to save her husband’s life. Meanwhile, the crying has been accelerated in fourth gear. The lover has to sacrifice all to play the kind-hearted matchmaker between two poor souls. Poor not because of their misfortune but the bad regressive writing! I bet, pick any old Hindi film of 60’s titled on its main female lead and it will have more liberal, sympathetic and progressive plot than this. If the plot doesn’t engage you at all, dialogues also don’t do any better. Everyone seems to be in the race to mouth lines soaked in grave philosophy about life, marriage, man-woman relationship and what not. It’s exactly like listening to Bhatt Saab’s dreadful life-lessons at any social-forum. Melodrama is another abysmal addition that creates an unbearable situation equivalent to any Balaji TV soaps. The background score actually travels the same crescendo once when Hari gets violent over Vasudha’s love confession.

HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI has three bankable actors in its kitty. Emran Hashmi being the crowd-puller tries his luck as a serious performer here. He took it in a literal sense, I fear. Still, he is not unbearable at all but Vidya is. She constantly posses as either the most unfortunate girl on earth or the most undeserving for all the good things life has to offer her. In both conditions, one thing remains same and unvarying; the crying. Rajkumar Rao is good. His portrayal of a sadistic, male-chauvinist and solipsist husband could have more shades but the length hardly allows him to open the wings. Narendra Jha (of HAIDER fame) reminds me of Irrfan Khan getting wasted in his earlier acting-sting in Bhatt camp. Actor of such caliber deserves more and better.

Overall, Mohit Suri’s HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI is meant to have intent to get you sunk in deep, dead world of an uncompleted-unfinished love saga but turns out to be a sob-sob dated story where nothing makes a connect, neither the pain nor the love. I know a couple of single-mothers who don’t need to put fake cards on her son’s birthday gifts in the name of separated fathers; they are the fathers. Appreciate them if you get a chance! [1.5/5]

EK VILLAIN: An intense love-story or unintentionally funny thriller? [2/5]

Negative attracts. Villains get most of the claps. Well, mostly. So in case, if you make it to resist yourself from falling over your current heartthrobs on screen; Shraddha Kapoor riding high on AASHIQUI 2’s success and the cute-faced, no-nonsense and impressively the most sincere looking student of Kjo’s school Sidharth Malhotra respectively for boys & girls; you have also on board one of the most deliciously mystified villain played by Riteish Deshmukh. A perfect casting, quite enticing in this case is a fool-proof strategy to bring big numbers in theatres and at the box-office both. Half battle is won.

Now, let’s have some crisp, meaty, tense, on the edge plot that could have the audience seated for longer than interval at least. Plot? Really? Aren’t we asking for much, especially in Bollywood? But why to worry if there are plenty of inspirations floating all over the cinema-world! And the team chooses South Korean revenge thriller I SAW THE DEVIL.  With added melodic music that includes an item number too, anyone would have predicted ages before going on the floor that the film will be a success in all respects. It looks. It sounds. It appears but sadly and only on paper. It’s time to face some reality. Mohit Suri’s EK VILLAIN is a mishmash of a love-story that tries hard to be intense and an unintentional revenge drama that thrills only at one occasion or two.

Ethically, there is not much to unravel in the plot as it being a suspense thriller, though you can easily predict it from a mile away. So, let’s stick to the characters and not the major events. Shraddha Kapoor plays Ayesha- a girl in high spirits with her bucket-list of dreamy wishes like watching peacocks dancing in the ‘first’ rain of the season, catching a butterfly and you can go on & on with a wide-eyed expression of ‘How romantic!’ on your face. She also loves to talk in a manner tried & tested well before by all prominent Bollywood heroines from Hema Malini in ‘SHOLAY’ to Asin in ‘GHAZNI’. She comes last in the list of ‘who performed well’.

In execution of one of these silliest wishes, she seeks help of a cold-blooded murderous henchman Guru, played by yours truly Sidharth wearing a grumpy look on face from the acting rulebook. What happens next? Any guesses? No, he doesn’t kill the girl. No, the girl doesn’t kill him for what he’s done but they both fall in love. I bet you haven’t had it in your weirdest dream. Enters Riteish playing Rakesh, a simple-sober-soft spoken regular guy who doesn’t want much in life but to be a hero for his son and wife! With a nagging, beating & harassing wife [played by Aamna Sharif], it is quite an impossible task. So, the constantly piling anger, frustration and rage arouse the violent streak in the guy. How the three cross each other’s path is better left unspoken.

At best, EK VILLAIN is a melodramatic average Bollywood thriller with predictably ridiculous storyline that barely imposes any sense of emotional connect to any of the characters. They are loud screaming hard to make themselves noticed. The twists and turns are some relief in order to infuse some excitement. In one of scenes, Kamaal Rashid Khan of ‘DESHDROHI’ is seen justifying domestic violence on women as a part of common middle-class men’s stress-release process. If a writer could come up with such character on screen that too without giving him a proper lesson at the end, I mourn the death of sensibility in such creative area of work. Even my anger is piling up for obvious reasons! Let’s end it here and here! [2/5]

SHAADI KE SIDE-EFFECTS: Hilarious in parts, dramatic second half loses the fun, pun & pace! [2.5/5]

The latest being, “this country election has only bachelors contesting against each other e.g. Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamta, Mayawati, Jayalalitha as only a bachelor is destined to change the fate of country otherwise married people can’t even change a TV Channel at their own”, jokes on marriages are the most tried and tested in any social gathering. Comforting-consolatory for married ones, cheering-encouraging for bachelors! Saket Chaudhary’s SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS tries to associate, formulate and encash the very same momentary bits of joy in a full-fledged drama on screen. No wonder, it turns out to be hilarious in parts but after a point, too stretched and unidirectional to recall as a full-on entertainer. An average romantic comedy with perhaps more funny one-liners to count on!

Vidya Balan playing Trisha and Farhan Playing Siddharth Roy [Interestingly, the namesake of Vidya’s real life husband] are a happy couple always trying their best to excite-ignite their marriage life with a certain formula in which they both act like strangers on holiday and keep flirting with each other as much as they could. It works but only till they are not into their parenthood. First, Trisha’s shifting focus from hubby to baby, then expectations to become the best father in the world, Sid is forced to lead a secret parallel life to keep the young carefree Siddharth in him alive.

SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS is freshly comic in its first part where humor often comes with funny situations Sid is put in. Though only from man’s standpoint, film does well with observatory analysis of changes in man-wife relationship after having baby. The sleepless nights, sexless life, exhausting baby-sitting sessions, everything just leaves you in splits. Things go overboard when the humor is outdone with the emotional drama to make and meet a justified end to all this.

A romantic comedy with lengthened 2 hours 25 minutes of duration with strictly avoidable song sequences is saved here only by Farhan Akhtar’s dedicated performance. As the irritated, infuriated, neglected, sidelined, unsure, self-indulgent, frustrated Sid, Farhan looks his part well. His charm as a sincere actor is maintained. Vidya Balan has nothing very prominent to show-off since the narrative is male-oriented but she succeeds in playing a dominant, overprotective and sometimes catty wife. A good hand at writing and delicious cameos made by Ram Kapoor, stand-up comic artist Vir Das and Ila Arun are also listing as points in favor of the film. Ram Kapoor as the aspirational father, reliable husband and a well-settled family man is absolutely flawless and perfect to the part. Vir Das continues to live up to his image. Ila Arun is a surprise.

Despite being loudly insensitive about kids [In one exaggerated sequence, Sid forgets to take care of his kid-daughter for a soccer match on TV] and women at all stages, SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS produces good laugh but not without forcing you to look at your wrist-watch more than once as when it all will be over. Film’s climax too is very filmy, unsound and forcefully liberal. Overall, marriage is an institution where everyone has his own degree of masters. I am not sure how many will associate to this experience but this one is more like ‘Baby Ke Side-Effects’! Cute & sweet are just a word, after a point! Pun intended! LOOTERA: old-school romance retold-redefined in the finest form of cinema!

Move over instant love, experience intense love! Vikramaditya Motwane’s love saga LOOTERA is an old-school romance [all those Dev Anand classics if you remember] retold-redefined in the finest & superlative form of cinema. It’s pure, unadulterated and subtly mesmerizing in its each frame with an everlasting depth of emotions we naively have lost somewhere in today’s ‘where the hell are we going so fast’ way of life. So, it’s time to rediscover priceless moments of love, heartbreak, longing and redemption deep down within our ‘still very much alive’ hearts.

A heartfelt story inspired by O. Henry’s THE LAST LEAF, smoothly & unhesitantly transports you in times of 1950’s where vintage cars, regal mansions and zameendars in fears of ‘soon to be taken care of’ by the government of India come involuntarily in picture, in any given scenario. Varun- a swindler disguised as an archaeologist enters into vivaciously alive Pakhi’s life only to fall in love but with no fortitude to pursue it further and returns back in his dark galore of crime after blatantly shattering Pakhi’s world. The fate brings them together again, now in the turmoil of more harsh emotions like retribution & redemption.

With Mahendra Shetty’s charismatically painted-tainted-printed perfect picture frames, a thoroughly meticulous Art Direction, well-researched costume design, and spellbound performances that leave you speechless, this modern masterpiece is worth every penny you spend in the name of cinema. Sonakshi surprises you the most and come out as a winner all the way so does Ranveer. Great to find that the actor in question could really pull out in every situation he’s put into. Character artistes [Aadil Hussain as inspector K N Singh and the actor playing Pakhi’s Father] are also a reason to hold your interest intact while experiencing this picturesque & poetic journey of love.

But this writing-work will never get its dues if I can’t have praises for the captain of ship Mr. Motwane. In his directorial debut UDAAN, we all might have missed his simply understated finesse of art & craft because of revelation that it came with such beautiful story with unheard unseen before emotions but this time with LOOTERA, he doesn’t leave any stone unturned, any effort undone that has even a bare minimum chance to doubt on the filmmaker’s sense, sensibility and sensitivity. If UDAAN pronounced him Bollywood’s one of the finest storyteller, LOOTERA crowns him as the most evolved filmmaker, to my surprise in his only second venture.

Having stated that, I can not miss my warning that if you like to visit Cinemas only for a full-on entertainers having slapstick comedies, popular item numbers and nonsense action, this is strictly not yours type. It takes its time to grow on you, like love does in most cases and also it doesn’t always speak in words but emotions flow all over on this grand canvas of cinematic excellence. Experience it. [4/5]
