BAAGHI: Rebel with a Cause to Irritate! [1.5/5]

Change is constant but not for Indian Railways. In 1955, Sunil Dutt starrer RAILWAY PLATEFORM became an eyewitness to passengers of every kind being stranded at a deserted railway station for 24 hours when their train gets delayed due to some natural calamity. Decades later, it strikes again. This time, in Sabbir Khan’s BAAGHI! The train stops at a local station and declines to move ahead before the girl meets the boy, both show off their moves in a rain-dance, the villain gets introduced and even the lovebirds gets separated then and there to wrap up the chapter. All I can say is that things if not moving really hurt; be it the Indian railways or an emotionless story. BAAGHI is a romantic action-entertainer that irritates you more with regular romance, repetitive action and regrettable comedy track.

A vague mash-up of Telugu movie VARSHAM and the Indonesian path-breaking action thriller THE RAID: REDEMPTION; BAAGHI solely rests upon the all muscular, flexible and flashy shoulders of Tiger Shroff. Though limited in his talents on/for screen, Tiger is the only best thing happened to the film, apart from some of the magical visuals from southern India captured by ace-cinematographer Binod Pradhan.

BAAGHI has its own share of futility in romance and action both. Ronny [Tiger Shroff] falls in love with Siya [Shraddha Kapoor] instantly after watching her in a one-sided conversation with clouds. She loves rain, you know. And apparently whenever they meet, it starts raining. Who would not fall for such a phenomenal guy at such times when people in nation are dying while waiting for the rain? God must be really romantic, and carelessly crazy. Meanwhile, the villain also seems to have an eye for the girl loving rain. Raghav [Sudheer Babu] does everything in the villain’s textbook to get the girl, from killing his own father to kidnapping the girl and making various attempts to eliminate the boy.

Sabbir Khan makes an interesting and quite effective addition to the film in form of Kalaripayattu- a traditional martial art from Kerala. Till the time the film revolves around the institution Ronny has been placed in to learn the art, it never actually sees a dull moment but soon, Sabbir runs out of ideas and starts focusing on the tiring traditional concept of romance with all the dialoguebaazi and action. You can imagine the maker’s vision behind making this film when the opening credit roll reads ‘Chartered Accountant’ & ‘Financial Advisor’ slides way before the creative minds could get a mention.

Tiger gives it all when it comes to using his muscular strength, balance and will-power much-needed for some brilliantly choreographed action sequences but his trouble in moving facial muscles takes out all the empathy the boy earns for himself. Shraddha Kapoor too gets a few ass-kicking action-scenes on her part to impress. Sudheer Babu despite his effortless martial art moves, looks more like a slightly better version of Sachiin Joshi [Who?? Exactly]. Sunil Grover and Sanjai Mishra are a complete waste of talents. Sunil though gives you some quick chills as a scheming father to Shraddha’s character. Kalaripayattu Guru Grandmaster Shifu Shaurya Bhardwaj makes a fiery appearance on screen.

To sum up, BAAGHI comes out as a stale reproduction of 80’s/90’s idea of romance. A leech and lewd father ready to exploit his own daughter for financial profits, a powerful villain who stops at nothing and an obviously emotional hero who manages to rise up from the dust and hits back when the villain pushes him hard emotionally by disclosing the last hidden secret, “I killed him, you fool”! Good luck to you, if it suits your idea of entertainment! [1.5/5]

ABCD 2 (3D): 157 min long ‘Dance India Dance’ episode! [2.5/5]

Most of the times, you have to have seen the first part before opting to go for a movie-sequel. Well, most of the times! Written & directed by Remo D’souza, ABCD 2 (3D) doesn’t actually ask you to tick that box first but yes, you have to be a television junkie who keeps watching dance reality shows even on repeat telecast. The weathered formula for a TRP seeking episode is applied here utterly and unimaginatively to set the box-office ringing. And it succeeds, until just diving into stretching it too much to uphold your excitement on brilliantly performed dance-steps. More than calling ABCD 2 (3D) a dance-film, I think we should settle it with the term ‘dance-drama’ considering it has dance and (Melo) drama both in equal and strong measure.

Inspired by the real-life event of Fictitious Dance Group of Nalasopara, Mumbai making an incredible journey of rising from the rag to winning an international dance show; ABCD 2 (3D) follows the spirit of dance as much as shown on TV these days. Suresh [Played by Varun Dhawan] and his group of underdogs have been evicted from a dance reality show for exact-replicating moves from a famous YouTube video. To regain the lost respect in the arena; now they must enter a World Dance Championship in Las Vegas but not before convincing Vishnu Sir [Prabhudheva] to coach the team. Rest is a ‘seen before-been there’ series of dance performances in the championship mixed well with issues of different natures to make the ride tougher and trickier.

Remo D’souza doesn’t leave any stone unturned to make ABCD 2 (3D) a perfect dance film filled with its own share of dramatic subplots and emotional stories to make you go ‘Awww’ over. His mastery at choreographing dance numbers in the most astonishing way is undoubtedly at par any suggested standard, he also manages to take you through stunning visuals and spectacular cinematography but what lacks big time is the need of a good connecting story to cement all this. Subplots look placed precisely as any dance reality show does to mark a jump in TRP ratings. An unfortunate accident in rehearsal, missing mentor just before the main event, a severely ailing teammate and if this was not it, there are dedicated dance items to ignite your religious and nationalistic sentiments.

Film’s high points include your favorite ‘Dance India Dance’ stars sharing space on big screen, some genuinely well-conceived 3D shots and the hard works of its lead i.e. Varun & Shraddha Kapoor. If you could notice the camera shots not implying quick cuts on their dance, you will cherish the fact that both the stars are very dependable dancers too. Of course, Raghav Juyal aka Croc-roach, Dharmesh Sir and Punit Pathak of DID fame are there to beat your hearts faster than you think with much better and cleaner dance moves, still the Varun-Shraddha duo earn the deserving admiration. The cameos by Prachi Shah, Lauren Gottlieb, Pooja Batra and Tisca Chopra don’t do unjust.

Overall, ABCD 2 (3D) can only be remembered as a 157-min long extended episode of Dance India Dance- a reality dance show on Indian Television. If you can watch brilliantly choreographed, well-executed & passionately performed dance numbers back to back, one after the other for nearly 3 hours, this should be your bet. Watch out for the amazing title sequence performed by Illuminati UV light Group of ‘India’s Got Talent’, the chemistry between the real dancing heroes, astounding choreography and an arresting camerawork!

HAIDER: A Bollywood rare that tries to speak…emotionally & politically! [4/5]

1995, Kashmir. When single screen cinemas like Faraz & Sheila in Srinagar were turned into a full-fledged army camps & detention centers, we at the other side were probably unscathed enjoying those terribly silly love-stories on VHS in our drawing rooms and least bothered about that ‘integral part’ of our country. Calling it ‘integral’ itself is an irony. We normally don’t do that to other states. Are we? Vishal Bhardwaj’s HAIDER is a strong political statement retold and represented covered in the long dark shrouds of Shakespearian emotional saga. It’s depressingly sad, gloomy, violent, nerve-racking and makes you bleed emotionally.

Haider [Played by Shahid Kapoor] returns to his soil after his father goes missing in the bleak times of militancy contaminating the Jhelum waters. The disappearance soon gets linked with the unseen before closeness between his mother [Immeasurably talented Tabu] and his power-hungry uncle [Kay Kay Menon in a well-suited comfortable role]. The hunt for the missing and the haunting ache of losing all his emotional supports lands him into the fiery world of hatred, vengeance and revolt at personal front.

Adopted from ‘Hamlet’ of William Shakespeare, HAIDER suffers from the 'Chutzpah' of Vishal Bhardwaj as a deep and sound filmmaker who ruthlessly puts you through the gloomiest atmospheric tale of Kashmir in the times of brutal political turmoil. This is the time of ambiguity when even the closest to your heart can ask you, “Whose side are you on?”. This is the time when ‘Freedom’ merely has just one connotation to it. The burnt doors, broken windows, unclaimed houses and people holding their identity cards waiting in line for getting searched; Bhardwaj sensitively paints the pain and melancholia in the air. There is a scene actually where a man in a mental shock refuses to enter his own house before being searched by anyone. Created to give you a moment to laugh but really?

In its one of the most comical sequences, Vishal Bhardwaj gives us two of Salman Khan fans who also share the name with Salman and run a VHS parlor. There are also moments and elements snitched from the original work like the slightest intimation of layered mother-son relationship. It does make you uncomfortable at first but the makers deserve a pat on back for such bold baby-step. In other, watch out for the old gravediggers stealing the moment at the climax.

And now the performances! Not many might be familiar with Narendra Jha by name but this man exceeds all expectations as a fine performer in the role of Haider’s father. You will find Kashmir in him in all senses. Tabu as an unsettling soul seeking serenity is a mesmerizing presence on screen. She makes us miss her more in films. Kay Kay Menon is comfortably in his zone. Somehow, this is a role we have seen him wearing like a skin. Shraddha Kapoor doesn’t leave any scope to complain. Irrfan Khan in a special appearance brings a good amount of joy and a flare of surprise.

And then there is Shahid Kapoor! Where in the first part he hardly shows anything unforeseen and mostly repeats himself, in the second half he completely blows you off with a brilliantly acted monologue piece and constantly reinventing his acting skills!

Despite all this, there is of course a muddled theatrical concluding part, bearably lengthy duration of nearly 3 hours and harshly done back and forth narrative to offer a bumpy ride and a sense of dissatisfaction but the melancholic shades in the characters and in the character of Kashmir both painted beautifully by some of the most sincere and serious performances make HAIDER an experience worth putting your time and money in. A bollywood film trying to speak is rare and should get a warm welcome! (4/5)

EK VILLAIN: An intense love-story or unintentionally funny thriller? [2/5]

Negative attracts. Villains get most of the claps. Well, mostly. So in case, if you make it to resist yourself from falling over your current heartthrobs on screen; Shraddha Kapoor riding high on AASHIQUI 2’s success and the cute-faced, no-nonsense and impressively the most sincere looking student of Kjo’s school Sidharth Malhotra respectively for boys & girls; you have also on board one of the most deliciously mystified villain played by Riteish Deshmukh. A perfect casting, quite enticing in this case is a fool-proof strategy to bring big numbers in theatres and at the box-office both. Half battle is won.

Now, let’s have some crisp, meaty, tense, on the edge plot that could have the audience seated for longer than interval at least. Plot? Really? Aren’t we asking for much, especially in Bollywood? But why to worry if there are plenty of inspirations floating all over the cinema-world! And the team chooses South Korean revenge thriller I SAW THE DEVIL.  With added melodic music that includes an item number too, anyone would have predicted ages before going on the floor that the film will be a success in all respects. It looks. It sounds. It appears but sadly and only on paper. It’s time to face some reality. Mohit Suri’s EK VILLAIN is a mishmash of a love-story that tries hard to be intense and an unintentional revenge drama that thrills only at one occasion or two.

Ethically, there is not much to unravel in the plot as it being a suspense thriller, though you can easily predict it from a mile away. So, let’s stick to the characters and not the major events. Shraddha Kapoor plays Ayesha- a girl in high spirits with her bucket-list of dreamy wishes like watching peacocks dancing in the ‘first’ rain of the season, catching a butterfly and you can go on & on with a wide-eyed expression of ‘How romantic!’ on your face. She also loves to talk in a manner tried & tested well before by all prominent Bollywood heroines from Hema Malini in ‘SHOLAY’ to Asin in ‘GHAZNI’. She comes last in the list of ‘who performed well’.

In execution of one of these silliest wishes, she seeks help of a cold-blooded murderous henchman Guru, played by yours truly Sidharth wearing a grumpy look on face from the acting rulebook. What happens next? Any guesses? No, he doesn’t kill the girl. No, the girl doesn’t kill him for what he’s done but they both fall in love. I bet you haven’t had it in your weirdest dream. Enters Riteish playing Rakesh, a simple-sober-soft spoken regular guy who doesn’t want much in life but to be a hero for his son and wife! With a nagging, beating & harassing wife [played by Aamna Sharif], it is quite an impossible task. So, the constantly piling anger, frustration and rage arouse the violent streak in the guy. How the three cross each other’s path is better left unspoken.

At best, EK VILLAIN is a melodramatic average Bollywood thriller with predictably ridiculous storyline that barely imposes any sense of emotional connect to any of the characters. They are loud screaming hard to make themselves noticed. The twists and turns are some relief in order to infuse some excitement. In one of scenes, Kamaal Rashid Khan of ‘DESHDROHI’ is seen justifying domestic violence on women as a part of common middle-class men’s stress-release process. If a writer could come up with such character on screen that too without giving him a proper lesson at the end, I mourn the death of sensibility in such creative area of work. Even my anger is piling up for obvious reasons! Let’s end it here and here! [2/5]
