PK: Oh, My God! Year’s most entertaining Film! [5/5]

You can’t question religion. You can’t ask for logical explanations when it comes to one’s faith. We are not supposed to do that. We are not taught to do that. You have to be either an alien or an escapee from the nearest mental asylum. PK [played by the calculative risk-taker & a game-changer in many cases Aamir Khan] is one such rare genus. His level of indulgence with our worldly Gods is absolutely ‘out of this world’. His child-like innocence can bombard questions of all kind without giving you much time to think and react. He can also make you thunderstruck with his logical demonstrations about things you never bothered or rather apprehended to ask about. No doubt, he looks like a distant and conscientiously more intuitive cousin to Fungshuk Wangdu of 3 IDIOTS.

‘PK’ is another gem of Rajkumar Hirani’s school of film-making where success can also be formulated by assimilating an unfussy entertainment of dramatic but simple nature & a ‘never gets preachy’ social message weaved in good humor and honest emotions. So when PK- the untainted innocent soul discovers people buying goods of their needs simply by exchanging a piece of paper with an old man’s picture [our very own ‘father of the nation] printed on it, he starts collecting every single poster & newspaper-cutting carrying his image. Next, we are made realize how we only respect the ‘financial’ worth and not the ‘moral’ values the man lived his life for.

‘PK’ also dares to question your blind-faith on forged Godmen from all religions. It’s high time we turn to humanity as our primary religious conviction rather than wasting our hard-money and the gifted wisdom to differentiate right from wrong on someone else’s phony tactics. As PK says in the film, the God who created us is very different from the ones we created. And the prayers we make through these age-old practices are nothing more than a ‘wrong number’ call.

The biggest strength of ‘PK’ is that it talks less and speaks more. There is hardly a scene where you don’t get thrashed by one or other social issues or expected human behavioral flaws in us; in a very subtle, explicable, logical and entertaining manner. The Bhojpuri texture to the lingo adds to it fervently and freely. It is one of the most sugary languages spoken across country; still very misinterpreted and wrongly portrayed and performed for Bollywood films. ‘PK’ also doesn’t do it flawlessly but certainly the respect is there. For a change, I am not offended this time!

Hirani and Abhijat Joshi’s taut and an almost flawless screenplay gives you ample hilarious as well as heartwarming moments. Anushka Sharma impresses with her sparkling presence very well translated into a lovely & lively character on screen. Saurabh Shukla and Boman Irani are efficiently likeable. Sushant Singh Rajput is charming and plays it cool, though is only for a shorter role. And who wouldn’t agree? The leading man leads like no one does better. Aamir is known to reinvent his acting abilities as well as the commercial cinema in India. This one takes his efforts to the next level. He gives us a multicolored paan-chewing character you will take home immediately.

And if could give you more about the film, I would be writing it hours in row. There is so much to cheer-so much to cherish; you wouldn’t mind it going twice in its first week. I am ready for the evening show. Till then; my only reaction to the film is if Bollywood is meant to follow the latest formula for recreating similar box-office success, are we going to see many more ‘PK’s in coming years? I am sure, the answer is negative. PK is outstanding! PK doesn’t come to us too often! Go; get a slice of it…NOW! [5/5]

HAPPY NEW YEAR: 8-pack doesn’t disappoint! Laughter pack does! [2/5]

Farah Khan’s HAPPY NEW YEAR has blockbuster written all over it. So is Farah Khan’s trademark sense of humor coming out of anything & everything from sexist scrutiny and racist remarks to murderous-merciless mocking at the purest human emotions people usually love to cherish! So if you find nothing bad in ‘alag sirf NAME hain, baaki sab SAME hain’ comment on how Korean and Chinese people look relatively identical to a common ignorant Indian; there are chances you will love HAPPY NEW YEAR for its unarguably pathetic gags, hamming performances and an uneventful heist-plot even any of Farah Khan’s cute triplet could come up to start with.

HAPPY NEW YEAR is nothing but a wastrel celebration of two Khan’s collaboration for a gala event where audiences are cordially invited but their sensibility is taken for granted at many levels. The man on mission here is Charlie [Shah Rukh Khan], a son seeking revenge of his father’s unjust fate from a rich heartless fraud [Jackie Shroff]. To give him back what he deserves, Charlie plans to rob him of his diamonds worth gallons of millions. And there forms, a group of six losers as they love to call themselves with a mother-powered unmarried Parsi [Boman], a tapori [Abhishek], a bar dancer [Deepika], a young tech-savvy hacker [Vivaan] and a strapping & stripping stuntman [Sonu Sood]! But before the D-day comes, they have to be on stage participating in the ‘World Dance Championship’ i.e. ‘India’s got talent’ goes global!

Being unapologetically self-assured about her idea of mass-entertainment, Farah hardly tries to sound or look smart when it comes to give us a plot tagged with predictability as its only nature. Do not think harder or rather not even attempt it and you will easily foresee the next sharp turn ahead. Same goes with the gags. It’s either someone who can’t speak English or someone who has hearing impairment to produce cheap word-plays. Before Shah Rukh playing the master-planner and the captain of the ship comes up with the punch line spoken thrice in the film, “Every loser gets at least one chance to emerge as the winner”; let me tell you the concept of losers shown here. The Parsi brat stammers. The bar dancer constantly gets humiliated as being ‘Bazaaru Aurat’ by no one lesser than our leading man himself and easily falls in trap with his charming looks and English speaking skills. How pitiable can our Indian ladies be! At least in bollywood movies! On the other hand, we have Sonu Sood playing a strong-built single-headed who can jump into a fight soon someone shows disrespect to his mother but he himself doesn’t hesitate mouthing foul words having sisters in center. Double standards! Whatever creates humor!

With a tiring, tedious and repetitive 3 hours of duration, HAPPY NEW YEAR falls short of juicy dialogues, enjoyable dance numbers and praiseworthy performances. Only breathing space you notice is Shah Rukh’s magnetic screen presence, Deepika’s charismatic dance moves and Abhishek’s comic relief but as if Farah would not compromise with her instinct to ruin all emotions, she brings patriotism in the scene just before you try to locate the exit. You can be talent-killer. You can proudly be a robber. You also can be insensitively rude towards your fellow member of human race but just one patriotic song at the end with a tricolor in the backdrop and no one could ever question your heroism. Anyways, who bothers if the man in question is the king of Bollywood himself!

I clearly remember having greater laughs in a couple of ‘Comedy night with Kapil’ episodes on TV where the cast of HAPPY NEW YEAR appeared as its promotional routine. Well, I better go search those on YouTube after resting my case here.  That was epic! This is gimmick! A wafer pack full with air, if you get it! Watch it if you must! [2/5]

BHOOTHNATH RETURNS: A serious family entertainer that could have been sweeter if shorter! [3.5/5]

If you could just overlook the overtly stretched length of the film [2 hour 35 minutes to be précised], there is an enormous chance you would discover quite a complete family entertainer in Nitesh Tiwari’s directorial sequel BHOOTHNATH RETURNS that also manages to talk about many social issues in a loud, clear and smart way. A satirical take on criminalization, corruption and commercialization of Indian politics, BHOOTHNATH RETURNS is suitably backed by juicy writing with proper dose of wit and Indian melodrama, applause-worthy performances, fearless direction and a story that touches your heart at large.

Taking story forward from the previous part, Kailash Nath played by the towering inferno called Amitabh Bachchan is sent to an afterlife ghost world which is being run in a modus operandi similar to our slow-moving, uninterested, unresponsive government offices of all kinds. Just because he could not scare a little kid Banku on earth, he’s now sent back to earth to rectify his failure. But to his bad bad luck, the kid here a rough-tongued, carefree slumdog tapori named Akhrot from Dharavi [Parth Bhalerao, equally confident and high on talent] also bounces back to Bhoothnath’s scare tactics with, “tu bhoot hai toh main daayan, shaadi banayega??” The chemistry between two sparks from the very start and they become friends forever. Things look smooth until the events and actions lead them to Bhau- the local goon-turned-corrupt politician [Boman Irani in a bit repetitive but interesting role]. And then starts the most dis-interesting game of politics for common man with a new fascinating twist! Bhoothnath is ready to contest the election against Bhau!!

Writer-director Nitesh Tiwari smartly makes the story move from being a satirical take on life afterlife to the dead serious issues in current political scenario in our country. After a hilariously amusing first 45 minutes that includes mainly the bonding between Bhoothnath and Akhrot, when Nitesh takes a u-turn on politics with a grim-grave real visual montage of child-labor, poverty, unemployment and hunger on a goose-bumping song ‘Saahib nazar rakhna’ you sure dip in doubts if this is the right route for a bollywood entertainer?? But the way Nitesh takes it forward, it’s amazing!

From long queue of dead souls in waiting to get their desired reincarnation in the bhoot-world to Bhoothnath filing nomination in the Loksabha elections, film keeps you engaged and entertained for the most part and often in a regular interval. Only letdown here is the duration that makes you wonder if the film would ever end. On the performances, I would repeat Akhrot as he says to Bhoothnath, “thoda overacting kiya tu, but India mein yehi chalta hai”. Amitabh Bachchan is exceptionally likeable and emotive, Boman as a mean-menace Bhau suits the part but it’s Parth Bhalerao who stands taller than anyone else and steals the show with his power-packed coolness and ‘bindaas’ performance! Cameo by Anurag Kashyap and a short but soul-stirring part of a dead social activist by Vijay Maurya are worth mentioning.

In these times of elections, BHOOTHNATH RETURNS is the best bet for anyone to get motivated to cast his vote as it speaks in volumes about anything and everything in Indian politics and that too without losing its spirit, sensitivity and the entertainment quotient. It dares to inherit the sparks, simplicity and sincerity in the story-telling techniques any of ‘Raju Hirani’ movies successfully emboss…and succeeds too, if not for the whole in glimpse for sure! Watch it! [3.5/5]

YOUNGISTAAN: …where promises are meant to be left unfulfilled! [2.5/5]

Indian politics has become an easy target lately, to extract unforced jokes acting as nice silvery wrapper to our hopeless angst being buried down under. So, the consequences of sharing same ‘already travelled before’ path do come handy with debutante filmmaker Syed Ahmad Afzal’s political-romantic drama YOUNGISTAAN. It shows deep promises of being a potential political drama at the very start but sooner or later ends up as a progressive love-story trapped in the devious, dirty and demeaning political scenario in country at present.

Carrying strong references from real life politicians, scams and political episodes in the past, YOUNGISTAAN is a tale of transition of a young game-developer properly planned & positioned in Japan with his live-in partner, from his carefree life well-spend in night clubs to the inopportune flat & insipid luxury of roaming around in the guarded corridors of India’s most influential PM house.

Abhimanyu [Jacky Bhagnani plays it cool] is forced to sworn in as the prime-minister of India after his father [Boman Irani in a brief appearance] loses his battle against cancer. With all blurred and vague visions, where Abhimanyu is struggling his hard to make him look more sensible than being just a ‘28 years old good boy’ in the eyes of his haters, his often nagging live-in partner Anwita [Neha Sharma] is only concerned about countless protocols that come between the love-birds’ quality time together. Thank god, Akbar [Late Farooq Sheikh saab] the guardian-cum-friend-cum-philosopher-cum-guide is there with him as his PA. And more thanks and respect to Farooq Saab for making each frame a heartfelt memorial with his presence felt like this uncomplicated idol of minimalism is still with us captured in those moving reels. Alvida, Farooq Saab!

YOUNGISTAAN scores well in its nature and intent. It talks progressively about live-in culture in Indian society, it talks about necessities to bring vital changes in Indian politics, it also promises potential prospects for youth to join politics but a scattered and unfocussed screenplay minimizes its magnitude to a not-so-sharp and less-smart drama that spends most of its quality time in managing between his personal problems [paparazzi and pre-marital pregnancy for instance] and the cumulative expectations of viewers and the plot of emerging as the unquestionably confident winner all the way. After all, who doesn’t want to see an underdog playing superhero?? Sadly, YOUNGISTAAN lacks that orgasmic moment and like very much our politics, remains a self-centered average Bollywood film where promises are meant to be left unfulfilled!

As stated in a comment on Abhimanyu’s live-in relationship by a common man in a TV interview, “28 saal ke ladke se aap aur kya expect karoge? (What else would you expect from a 28-year old?), I would say something on the same lines, “Ek Bollywood film se aap aur kya expect karoge?” So, don’t expect and go for an easy watch. Politics in India doesn’t give you much to cherish but entertains in bits and parts, so does this film! [2.5/5]
